SMSes brings chaos

IPOH: Rumours that were circulated through SMSes nearly jeopardised the peace, harmony and religious freedom experienced by the Catholics of Ipoh.

All was well when the Tamil Mass began at 7.00am on Sunday, November 5, 2006. PENANG: College General, also known as The College of Martyrs celebrated the second of its Feast Days which culminated on Sept 20. This feastday commemorates the former lecturers and formators of the College who were martyred in Korea, also  referred to as “the Korean Martyrs”. They were canonised by  the late Pope John Paul II in 1984.

This year’s celebration was themed “Living Virtuously, Witnessing Fearlessly”. It was particularly pertinent because it called on the Church to live and witness as the Korean Martyrs — who gave up their lives in order to spare their flock from persecution — had done.

TAIPING: With a simple ceremony in the absence of the parish priest, the parishioners of the Taiping Catholic Church bade IJ Sisters Betty Andrew and Regina Leong a fond farewell at a sunset Mass in St Louis Church celebrated by the visiting priest, Fr Dominic Santhiyagu from Ipoh.

With the departure of the sisters, the Taiping chapter of the Infant Jesus Sisters was closed, winding up their 150 years of missionary and evangelising activity in Taiping, ranging from running orphanages to setting up of more than four prestigious convent schools, which had since been taken over by the Ministry of Education.

PENANG: Living the Church: Vatican II and Beyond was the theme of a three-day seminar for lay leaders of Penang Diocese by Fr Moses Lui, Parish Priest of the Church of St Peter, Melaka.

Organised by the Penang Diocesan Pastoral Institute, it was held at the College General from Aug 18 to 20. Twenty-six participants attended, with the majority coming from the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.

Christian Teachers’ Day celebration in Ipoh

IPOH: Sixty-six Christian teachers gathered at SMJK Ave Maria Convent on August 19 to celebrate Christian Teachers’ Day 2006.

After light refreshments and being welcome with warm and friendly hearts, the day began with songs of praise and worship to God led by Miss Lee Ah Kim.

This was then followed by a liturgical dance and skit by the students of the school.

John Main Seminar 2006

PENANG: Malaysia played host to 240 participants from 23 countries who attended the John Main Seminar  (JMS) 2006.

This is the first time this Seminar was held in Malaysia. Pauline Peters from Australia, as Chairperson of the Guiding Board for this World Community for Christian Meditation remarked that this was the largest number of participating countries since the conception of the John Main Seminar in 1983.

Mt Miriam Fun fair raises RM250,000 for new hospital equipment

PENANG: The Mount Miriam Hospital in Tanjung Bungah organised a charity food and fun fair in its premises to raise RM250,000 for its needy patients and palliative care centre.

The response to this event was overwhelming, with about 10,000 people from Penang and neighbouring states patronising the stalls. The hospital had managed to raise RM180,000 of the RM250,000 target even before the start of the fair.

IJ Srs Clement Samuel and Martina Heng transferred to Penang

SITIAWAN: Sr Clement Samuel and Sr Martina Heng who had been in Our Lady’s Convent for several years have now been transferred to the IJ Convent, Balik Pulau.

Sr Clement had been involved in the Tamil Apostolate, RCIA and Sunday school at the Church of St Francis de Sales. In spite of her age, Sr Clement took personal interest in the people who came to visit her for advice and counselling. Another concern of hers was the home visitation of the elderly and the sick in the hospital. Her gentle ways and pleasant smile attracted many people especially the Tamil-speaking parishioners.

PENANG: The “Vietnamese Martyrs” refers to five Vietnamese priests who received their training as seminarians in College General in the 19th century. They are Ss Philip Bui-Van-Minh (1815-1853), Peter Qui (1823-1859), Paul Le Van Loc (1831-1859), John Hoan (1798-1861) and Peter Luu (1816-1861), hereinafter referred to collectively as Philip Minh & Companions. All returned to serve in Vietnam. At the time of their deaths, Vietnam was seething with anti-colonialist and anti-Christian sentiment, and local priests were suspected of colluding with the enemy.
