Fatimah Hospital to offer cancer treatment
December 11 , 2009

IPOH: Hospital Fatimah, one of the country’s leading non-profit private hospitals, will soon be able to offer cancer treatment to residents in Ipoh and its surrounding areas.

Its CEO Dr Lim Chie Kean, said the Oncology Centre is expected to be ready by 2011. The ground-breaking ceremony was held in March this year. He was speaking during the launch of Fatimah Hospital’s family day celebrations here on Nov 29.

Celebrating the cannonisation of Jeanne Jugan
8 November 2009

PENANG : Jeanne Jugan or Mary of the Cross, foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor, was canonized by the Pope on Oct 11. A thanksgiving Mass on Oct 24 was held at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit to celebrate the occasion.

About 500 people were present, including the sisters and residents from the Home. Bishop Antony Selvanaygam was the main celebrant with Msgr Stephen Liew, Fr Francis Anthony, Fr Henry Rajoo, Fr Michael Thoo, Fr Michael Cheah, Fr Louis Victor, Fr Decroix and Fr Paul Cheong, OFM Cap concelebrating. 350 people, most of them Indonesians turned up for the 1st South Perak District Diocesan Migrant Sunday celebration on the 20 Sept. at Church of St Mary, Tapah. which was organized by the Diocesan Migrant Workers Support Center, under Penang Office for Human Development.. The theme for the celebration was ‘St Paul Migrant, Apostles of the People’.

 

The event began with a Mass in Bahasa Malaysia, presided over by parish priest, Fr. Vincent Paul. The whole Mass was animated by the Indonesians.  A day before the Mass, the Indonesians were already at the Church for Choir practice. They came in buses to practice and stay overnight at the hosting church.

Working with refugees workshop
The Diocesan Migrant Ministry (DMM) of POHD organised a recently one day workshop entitled “Working with Refugees” at the Penang Diocesan Centre. The workshop, organised as part of POHD's involvement with the Jaringan Utara Migrasi & Perlarian (JUMP) which focuses on promoting awareness of migrant and refugee issues. The workshop which took place on 19th September,  saw 35 participants from the Catholic Churches in Penang Diocese, Protestant churches, NGOs and interested individual coming together to learn the basic ropes of working with refugees. Malaysian clergy’s annual retreat in Stella Maris, Penang

PENANG : Fifty-one priests from all over Malaysia attended a week-long retreat at Stella Maris conducted by Bishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle of the Diocese of Imus, Philippine.

The retreat focused on the Year for Priests’ theme Faithfulness to Christ, Faithfulness of Priests. “It is to lead the priests to rediscover and appreciate vocation to the priesthood and to follow the fidelity of Christ,” shared Bishop Tagle.

their unfortunate brothers and sisters.  The Penang Diocesan Lenten Campaign 2009 recorded their highest collection ever in six years.

The total amount collected was RM392,348.27, an increase of 33.47% over the previous year.

La Salle Brothers conferred DSPN

PENANG: It was a double-joy occasion for the Lasallian alumni when Bro Dr Michael Jacques FSC and Bro Paul Ho Kok Chee FSC were each conferred the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) by the Penang Governor in conjunction with his 71st birthday. The DSPN award carries the title of Datuk.

Bro Jacques spent more than 50 years of his life educating and touching the hearts of young Malaysians. He joined the La Salle Order in 1935 at the age of 19. As a young Brother he served the Institute of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools in various capacities from 1938 until his retirement in May, 1985. Read More
Feastday of College General

PENANG: The Feast of College General together with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart was heralded in by the grand entrance of 11 celebrants. About 160 laity from across Penang, had filled up the old Chapel of the Sacred Heart. The chapel was adorned beautifully with an array of fresh flowers from the college gardens. The Dean of Studies, at College General, Fr Gerard Theraviam and choirmaster, Andre Ong, had patiently and with much effort prepared the choir, who were made up of seminarians, external students and friends of College General. Franciscans bring cheer to the homeless

PENANG: On Dec 29, 2008, the Secular Franciscans and the Capuchins, together with  Vincent Lim and Andrew from the Lighthouse and Lisa and her colleagues from NOHD, combed the streets of the heart of Georgetown at about midnight to seek out the homeless to try to show them the meaning of Christmas – that God loves everyone.  They chatted with them and gave each homeless a gift of RM10.
