IPOH: The 2010 Lenten Campaign in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes was launched on Feb 21 during the Tamil and English Masses. The theme for this year is Love Your Neighbour. The Love Squad consisting of 65 students is headed by the faith formators of the Form Five Confirmation class together with the strong support of the Parish Priest, Fr Bernard Paul, as well as the Parish Catechetical Team. In his homily, Fr Bernard Paul spoke about the saving experience of the people coming out of the Land of Egypt. Secondly, he spoke about the desert experience and the Promised Land. IPOH : Migrant Sunday celebrations at Our Lady of Lourdes church in Silibin on Sept 27, attracted some 100 migrants from Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam and Africa.
The event, organised by the Migrant Ministry of the Penang Diocese, was enthusiastically carried out by 20 volunteers from OLOL’s youth and the parish migrant ministry. Read More |

This exhibition was about St Paul, His Missions, His Journeys and His Messages. Edwin Gomez, the Chairperson of the Bible Ministry, explained that this exhibition marks the culmination of a series of programmes undertaken by OLOL Bible Ministry to commemorate the Jubilee Year of St Paul from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009 as declared by Pope Benedict XVI to mark the bimillenary of St Paul’s birth. April 17 , 2009 By Molly Anne IPOH: A Blood-Organ Donation & Free Medical Check-up organized by the Love Squad of the Church of Our Lady Of Lourdes with the cooperation of the Ministry of Health Malaysia was a great success. During the Lenten Season the Love Squad members helped to create awareness of the poor and the marginalized. The members were able to get their parishioners’ involvement in social welfare activities which can be done at different levels. The theme for this year was Don’t Turn Your Back. The Love Squad consisting of over 60 Form 5 Confirmation students is headed by Peatrice Earthiam with the strong support of Parish Priest Fr Bernard Paul, the Parish Catechetical Team and the Parish Human Development Community (PHDC). In the Eucharistic celebration, Fr Bernard stressed that Lent is about is “sacrifice”. Therefore we are called to bring good news to the afflicted, the poor, the marginalized and the needy. December 28, 2008 IPOH: A visiting Bible scholar and educator, Fr Dr Peter A. Abir, gave Ipoh Catholics a brief session on the Spirituality of St Paul, at the Bernadette Centre of Our Lady of Lourdes Church OLOL). The event organized by the Bible Ministry of OLOL was held in conjunction with the Year of St Paul. Participants had the choice of attending the session in English or Tamil. The two-hour session outlined Paul’s background, his life, his duty consciousness as a Christian, and his personal spirituality. It especially focused on his acceptance of suffering for Christ. 19 October 2008 IPOH: Over 100 migrants from Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Nepal and Vietnam gathered in solidarity with parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, in Silibin here, to celebrate Migrant Sunday on Sept 28 on a grand scale. The migrants, who are mostly factory and contract workers, made their way to OLOL church, to participate in the bilingual Eucharistic celebration and then for fellowship and a cultural mix of dances, songs and games at the parish hall, followed by lunch of delicious nasi kandar and cakes. 18 May 2008 IPOH: The Catechetical event of Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL), for 2008 kicked off with a ‘Colouring Competition’ for the primary students age 6 to 9 years old. Immediately after the morning Mass, almost 260 students gathered in the parish hall. Annamal, the Standard 1 teacher, briefed the children on the rules. The main focus was for the children to interact with each other by sharing colour pencils, exchanging ideas, laughing at each other, teaching one another, etc. After an hour, all the children had finished colouring. The teachers collected the pictures and the event ended with a closing prayer. The results will be announced soon. Before leaving, some food and goody bags were given to all the children. The groundwork for the competition started in Feburary. Catechism teachers of Pre-School, Std 1, Std 2 and Std 3 from English and Tamil came together to organise the event. — By J. Larry ![]() |

4 November 2007 IPOH: “If your faith were the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree: Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you.” Luke 17:5-10 This was the verse which Fr Victor Louis centred his homily for the Feast of St Francis of Assisi on Oct 6 at the Chapel of St Francis of Assisi in Tasek. “There was a woman,” said Fr Victor, who after reading this verse from the Bible went out of her house and said to a coconut tree “uproot yourself”. The next day she saw that nothing had happened at all to the tree at all. “Just like the woman in the story, we tend to not have complete trust and faith in God,” said Fr Victor after which he went on to highlight several points. 4 November 2007 IPOH: Recently, a blood donation drive was held at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, in the parish hall. The campaign, organised by the PMMCC was held mainly to obtain blood for Hospital Besar, Ipoh to treat the injured or any casualties during the Hari Raya celebration period. The organisers also hoped that the campaign would encourage and motivate more parishioners to come forward and donate blood generously for the welfare of others. This charitable event, which took the better part of three hours, saw a fair crowd made up of parishioners and non-parishioners alike, coming to donate blood generously. The organisers were assisted by medical personnel from Hospital Besar, Ipoh who commented that they were happy with the turnout and would be more than happy to take part in such a programme again next year. — By David Pravin Read More |

23 September 2007 IPOH: A half-day health camp was organised and held on August 25 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL), Silibin. This community service project was a collaborative effort between Fatimah Hospital and the Parish Human Development Committees (PHDC) of OLOL and St Michael’s Church, Ipoh. Activities held during the health camp included talks and medical consultations by Dr P. Moganaraju (an O & G specialist) on women gynaecological problems and Dr S. Shan Narayanan (a paediatrician) on child development. For the general public, there was health screening for blood pressure, random blood sugar, BMI and body fat assessment. The hospital staff also conducted demonstrations on self breast examination for women. In addition, free basic medicines and multi-vitamins were dispensed to participants. The PHDCs would like to express their deep appreciation to the doctors and staff of Fatimah Hospital for sacrificing their time and effort for this community service project. 22 July issue of The Herald IPOH: With a myriad of dishes ranging from one cuisine to another, great music and games and a large turnout, it was indeed a fun-filled day for all who came to the Food Fair held at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Held after the 8.00am trilingual Mass on July 1, 2007, the church grounds were packed with people surveying and buying food stuff and other items that were on sale while stall owners rushed to meet the demands of the large crowd of approximately 1,000 people. The food fair was organised to raise funds for the new Parish Activity Centre, which is said to cost approximately RM1.5 million. Read More |

8 October issue of The Herald IPOH: The Penang Diocesan Youth Network recently organised a three-day stay-in programme called Persons Are Gifts which was held in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Silibin. A total of 31 Tamil -speaking youths from the ages of 13 to 17 years old took part in the programme. This programme introduced by Fr Ignatius Huan, was first initiated in English in the Melaka-Johor Diocese. After much research, the Tamil youth coordinator and a team of volunteers from the Penang Diocesan Youth Network studied the programme and translated it into Tamil. Read More |
