Harvest festsival at Sitiawan

The Church of St Francis de Sales in Sitiawan, Perak, comes alive with Sabah and Sarawak culture when the annual Gawai/Kaamatan festival, organized by the Penang Office for Human Development (POHD) together with the BEC TLDM Sitiawan, was celebrated on 25 June.

 

About 300 parishioners, including Sabahan and Sarawakians from the BEC TLDM (Tentera Laut Dalam Malaysia – the Navy) community turned up for the happy occasion.

Fathers’ Day at St Francis De Sales

SITIAWAN: The parishioners of St Francis De Sales together with their parish priest, Fr Arulnathan Joseph, celebrated Fathers’ Day on June 20.

Immediately after the Eucharistic celebration, all fathers aged 70 and above were asked to come forward. The youths then pinned a corsage on each of them and gave them each a special prayer card. Then, the fathers were called to cut the ‘Fathers’ Day Cake’ together with Fr Arul.

A representative for all the fathers then thanked Fr Arul, the members of BEC Taman Hijau and the youths for the love and care they had taken in organising this event. It was indeed a very memorable day for all the fathers and the parishioners.
SFDS Prayer group celebrates 30 years

SITIAWAN : The St Francis de Sales (SFDS) prayer group celebrated its 30th anniversary on Sept 26.

 

The SYLS prayer group was formed by IJ Sr Marie Angels.

 

The celebration commenced with praise and worship in English and Bahasa. The theme for the day was Be In Communion and this was the message offered to the congregation.

 

The facilitator for the day was Paul Siau from the prayer group of the Church of St Ignatius in Petaling Jaya. The talk was attended by about 90 participants.

Bishop Selva visits Sitiawan

SITIAWAN : Sept 13 saw the Bishop of Penang, Rt Rev Bishop Antony Selvanayagam, visiting the parish of Sitiawan to take part in two special events.

 

In the afternoon from 2.00pm to 6.00pm, he observed the session on Leadership Training conducted by the Asipa team from Penang. Leaders and assistant leaders of all the BECs and Youth representatives gathered for the session conducted in three languages.

 

The presenters touched on Community Skills and Listening Skills. The participants were told to avoid giving comments on someone’s sharing etc, as this would discourage them from further sharing.

Feast of St Anne in Air Tawar

SITIAWAN: The Chapel of St Anne, Air Tawar, celebrated the chapel feast on Aug 2.

The celebration began with the flag hoisting ceremony followed by Novena prayers and Eucharistic celebration. The main theme for the whole celebration was Spirituality of Communion. Fr David Lourdes, the parish priest of the Taiping Catholic Church was the main celebrant for the Mass in Tamil. In his homily he touched on the CHURCH — the seed and beginning of God’s Kingdom. Retreat, vigil to welcome Pentecost at Sitiawan parish

SITIAWAN: In preparation to celebrate the feast of Pentecost, a three-day retreat with vigil was held at the Church of St Francis de Sales.

Held in three languages, Fr Anthony Pillai from Kuala Kangsar parish preached in Tamil with Fr Vincent Paul from Tapah parish preaching in English and IJ Sr Margaret preaching in Mandarin.

The theme for the three days was The Role of the Holy Spirit. The speakers touched on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, mainly wisdom, understanding, knowledge, right judgment, courage, piety and fear of the Lord. Read More
Feast of Our Lady of Fatimah

SITIAWAN: The annual feast of our Lady of Fatimah was celebrated in Sauk Padi, an Asli Camp on May 17 at 4.00pm. The whole celebration was in Bahasa Malaysia. The chapel comes under the jurisdiction of the parish of St Francis de Sales, Sitiawan.

A total of about 120 people comprising the Orang Asli community and well-wishers from Sitiawan, TLDM Base, Lumut and the neighbouring parishes came to participate and witness this year’s celebration. Fr Arulnathan Joseph in his homily touched on the life of Mother Mary. The day ended with a fellowship where special Orang Asli dishes were served. Read More

SITIAWAN: As Son, Jesus bestowed honour on His Mother and in the same way all Mothers who had gathered together on Mothers’ Day on May 10 were also bestowed honour during the Eucharistic celebration.

Parish priest Fr Arulnathan Joseph, in his homily praised all mothers for their genuine love and care for their children and the parish. He said, “God blesses all mothers, both young and old. The community gathered together also loves them as well.” Read More
Joyful Easter celebration at Church of St Francis De Sales

SITIAWAN: The Parishioners of St Francis De Sales Church experienced a joyful Easter celebration.

Many events were organised during Lent in the parish. Special mention must be made of Fr Arulnathan Joseph for having the ‘Orang Asli Stay In Experience.’ As a Lenten experience he wanted parishioners to experience a one-night stay programme at Saul Padi, an Orang Asli village which is about 45 km away in a Felda Camp. Celebration of the Feast of St Francis De Sales

SITIAWAN: For the first time in 111 years, a procession marking the feast of St Francis de Sales was held along the quiet streets of Sitiawan. Hundreds of parishioners and visitors from neighbouring towns participated in the candlelight procession which was witnessed by curious spectators and passers-by.

The feastday celebration held over four days were presented in Mandarin, Tamil and English to cater to the different language groups in the parish. Read More
Cooperation and awareness vital for growth as a community

SITIAWAN: Parishioners of the Church of St Francis de Sales held their Parish Assembly on Nov 12 and 13. In the opening address, Parish priest, Fr Arulnathan Joseph, said although he had been in this parish only for a very short period, he found the achievement for the period  satisfactory.

However, he went on, owing to poor leadership, certain areas were slow to progress. He hoped that after this assembly, the situation of the parish will improve. Fr Arul stressed that there should be complete cooperation and awareness among all the various language speaking ministries in order to grow as a community. Read More

St Anne Chapel, as good as new
5 August 2007

SITIAWAN: St Anne’s Chapel, which was in a dilapidated condition and not used for many years, has now been repaired, renovated and painted.

Bishop Antony Selvanayagam blessed the chapel on July 22. The event began with Bishop Selva cutting the ribbon at the entrance while a hymn in Tamil was sung. The bishop explained  that the rite of Blessing symbolises our baptism. He asked the congregation to be attentive to the beautiful Prayer of Blessing. Read More

Feastday celebration of the Church of St Francis de Sales

SITIAWAN:  Parishioners of the Church of St Francis de Sales celebrated their feastday with a triduum beginning from January 25.

The celebration kicked off with a flag-raising ceremony by Fr Charles Chin from the Church of St Mary, Tapah.
Fr Chin in his homily expounded on the theme of Discipleship. Speaking in Mandarin and English, Fr Chin also gave a brief history of St Francis De Sales. Read More

SITIAWAN: A joint celebration was held at the Church of St Francis de Sales to celebrate the First Holy Communion and to bid farewell to the Sarawakian nuns.

In preparation for their Holy Communion, 18 children from the English-, Tamil- and Chinese-speaking groups attended a camp animated by teachers and lay leaders. The students shared that the sacrament of reconciliation was a great experience, as this was a new experience for them.

SITIAWAN: More than 350 people gathered in Bruas, a small country town in the District of Manjung to celebrate the Feast of St Jane Chantal.

Jane Frances de Chantal was a simple housewife and widow. She became a close friend of Bishop Francis de Sales. She dedicated her life for the care of the poor and the sick and was later made a saint.

IJ Sister celebrates 60th anniversary of religious life

SITIAWAN: It was a time of joy and celebration for both the IJ Sisters and the Parishioners of St. Francis de Sales on the occasion of Sister Annie Newman (pic) celebrating 60 years in religious life.

The celebration took place on Dec 7 at the IJ Convent, with a Eucharistic celebration.

Sr Annie joined the Novitiate in 1945 and received the gift to pray in LOVE that opened up a new perspective in her missionary life. She loved and served her mission when she was a teacher and also Principal in the Kota and Klian Pau Convents, Taiping, Perak. As any ordinary young person she loved concerts and operettas and these were the highlights of her life that she thoroughly enjoyed and cherished.

New PPC for Church of St Francis de Sales

SITIAWAN: The Church of St Francis de Sales, held the installation of their new Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) members during the Sunday Mass. In his sermon, parish priest Fr Nelson Joseph said that their main duty is to work with him.

The PPC is also to be the voice of the parishioners. Fr Nelson advised them that any matter regarding church administration should be brought to him directly.

Prayer is acknowledging the presence of God

SITIAWAN: Bishop Anthony Selvanagam made a 4-day pastoral visit to the Church of St Francis de Sales (SFDS), recently. During his visit, he visited the Orang Asli Centre in Suak Padi where he said Mass and later joined in the fellowship.

He then visited the Chapel of St Jane Frances de Chantel in Bruas where he met the parishioners and celebrated Mass in the evening. The next day, the Bishop had a meeting with the Parish Pastoral Council members of SFDS, both the old and the newly elected members, and reminded them of their responsibilities. The pastoral visit culminated in a four-language Eucharistic Celerbration.
