PENANG: For more than 90 people who attended the five-day “Potta” Inner Healing and Growth retreat in Penang on Nov 30, it was a time of transformation and renewal. In a most creative way, the two Vincentian priests who conducted the retreat, Fr Varghese Parackal VC and Fr Joseph Rojan, made the retreat interesting and wonderful when sharing the Word of God. Both priests are based in Perth, Australia.

The spelndour of truth found in the Catholic Church

17 October 2010

PENANG: In the Sept 28 issue of the HERALD round-up report on Diocesan Assemblies/Synod, Bishop Antony Selvanayagam acknowledged that although PDPA had opted training and formation as its “main priority”, the response was often not encouraging. True. So, let me be the bearer of some truthfully splendid news — the recent Splendour of Truth formation organised by the Immaculate Conception Parish (IC) made a big “catch” of about one hundred and eighty participants!

Love One More Child campaign at IC parish
August 12 , 2009

PENANG: The PHDC of the Church of the Immaculate Conception launched the Love One- More-Child Campaign in July. Adult parishioners were invited to take on the role of mentoring schoolgoing children to assist and complement the efforts of the parents/ guardian.

While the general involvement of these mentors is to offer the fundamental gift, the gift of love and friendship towards a relationship of trust and easy dialogue, the main focus is to motivate and animate these children in education needs. Financial contribution and rewards for improved performance in studies is at the mentors’ generosity. Commitment is indicated to the mentors as one year, renewable subject to the agreement by both parties. The first batch of children were identified from the SSVP adoptee families. Response to take on the mentor role has been very heartening. Read More

IC parish SSVP helps flood victims
November 23, 2008

PENANG: The torrential rain over the past few weeks caused the low lying areas at Balik Pulau to be severely affected by the flood. As a natural consequence, many houses were destroyed.

Children could not go to school and traffic was at a standstill. It was indeed a pathetic sight to see the flood victims.

Welfare Officers were on hand to offer immediate assistance to the flood victims.

The SSVP of the Church of the Immaculate Conception (CIC) offered monetary help and also contributed clothes as well as rations to the unfortunate few.

Fr Marshall Fernandez, the Parish Priest of CIC,  also provided financial help to the needy.

Due credit must be given to Stephen Lim and Alice Quah who led the SSVP and the Chinese Apostolate in assisting the flood victims in their hour of need.
Coffee Morning to raise funds for marginalised
28 September 2008

PENANG: In an effort to raise funds for the marginalised and the unfortunate few, the Society of St Vincent De Paul (SSVP) held a “coffee morning” at the Church of the Immaculate Conception recently. Parishioners thronged the food stalls where delicious koay teow, noodles, cakes, biscuits and other goodies were for sale. Everyone had something to satisfy their taste buds.

SSVP members dressed in their familiar “t-shirts” were on hand to serve the crowd and by noon, the food was all sold out. The funds raised would go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of the marginalized and the hardcore poor.

With the support and guidance given by Fr Marshall Fernandez and Fr Mark Michael, SSVP is well on the road to success towards meeting the expectations of the needy. Kudos to all the well wishers and the SSVP members for their cooperation and fraternity.

True independence comes from God
16 September 2007 issue of the Herald

PENANG: It was a joyous morning as the parishioners of the Church of the Immaculate Conception gathered as a community to start their Merdeka celebration with the Merdeka Mass.

In his homily, Fr Mark Michael spoke on how independence can be seen in different perspectives and realised in our everyday situations. He told a story about a woman who had a boyfriend, who got her pregnant and left her stranded. The woman later gave birth to baby girl and raised her herself. The woman never told her daughter about her tragic past. When the girl turned 18, she found out about her mother’s past and was furious and started scolding the mother for hiding the truth. The mother was not hurt or sad when this happened. She calmly told her daughter, “I kept this a secret so that even though I have made huge mistakes in my life, I have still managed to bring you up as a chaste young woman, away from evil and I am very proud of that.” Read More

Penang parish organises food fair
7 Jan. 2007 issue of The Herald

PENANG: December 17 was a momentous day for the Church of the Immaculate Conception (CIC), Pulau Tikus as the Parish Council under the skillful guidance of parish priests, Fr Marshall Fernandez and Fr Mark Michael, along with various Church Ministries, organised a grand Food and Fun Fair.

The SSVP was given a food stall and a jumble sale stand which stirred the silence of the church grounds with cheerful shouts of “Come one, come all, come to the SSVP stalls”, “Buy one, get one free,” and “You name it, we have it”. Among the SSVP members involved were Ivy, Felix, Katherine Joo and Bany, who went all out to sell the assorted items donated generously by the church community. At the end of the day, the coffers were filled to the brim.

Meanwhile, Stephen Lim and Elsie Lim were busy distributing coupons to SSVP adoptees to purchase food and drinks. The SSVP Food Stall was under the care of Theresa Fong and Audrey Wong, assisted by other SSVP members. Together they dished out portions of delicious Penang food which drew a large crowd to the stall. It was heart-warming to see all the SSVP adoptees and their children intermingling and eating to their hearts’ content.

The SSVP wishes to thank the CIC Parish Priests, Parish Council, benefactors and all its well-wishers for their generous support of the SSVP.

Penang SSVP brings joy to the poor
7 Jan. 2007 issue of The Herald

PENANG: In the spirit of giving and sharing, the Vincentians of the Conference of the Immaculate Conception hosted a “fellowship” for the less fortunate.

The day kicked off with a sumptuous feast served to the SSVP adoptee families. After a satisfying meal, the families received their monthly financial assistance and rations. In conjunction with the Christmas season, the families also received an extra allowance in the form of ang pow.

With the dawn of a new year, school-going children needing additional support to cover uniforms, textbooks, school bus fare and miscellaneous educational expenses, received cash aid to greet 2007 with fresh, back-to-school enthusiasm. Parents and the school-going children were delighted to receive the “bonus.”

The success of raising the necessary funds for the end-of-year extra expenses is owed to the finance committee led by James Goon, Elsie Lim and Stephen Lim. Syabas!

The SSVP wishes to thank Fr Marshall, Fr Mark, donors, benefactors, parishioners, all SSVP members and everyone who helped in one way or another in making this a happy day for the poor amongst us and for making the year 2006  a meaningful and successful one.
