Ozanam Drop-in Centre launched in Sg Siput
23 September 2007

SUNGAI SIPUT: The Ozanam Drop-in Centre was recently launched with a blessing ceremony by Fr Anthony Pillai, Parish Priest of St John the Baptist Church. The opening of the Drop-in Centre was the culmination of a long-cherished dream of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP), Conference of Sungai Siput.

Through studies and their years of service in this area, members of the Conference had identified poor and needy single mothers and their children as a neglected group requiring help and support. General society often equates single mothers with women and girls who become pregnant out of wedlock. This is a narrow and incorrect perception as the definition also covers women who are widows, divorcees, aunts and even grandmothers caring for their abandoned grandchildren. Read More

Labour Day celebrations at Sg Petani parish
27 May 2007 issue of The Herald

SG PETANI: Workers’ Day, or Labour Day, was celebrated at Christ the King Church with a Eucharistic Celebration, especially for the parish’s sizeable number of migrant workers. The Eucharistic celebration was coordinated with the help of the migrants’ coordinator, Robin Fernandez.

The Mass, in Bahasa Malaysia, was animated by the migrants themselves, with the liturgy being prepared by Naim and Dwy.

In his homily, parish priest, Fr Michael Dass, referred to St Joseph the Worker, the patron saint of workers, as a hardworking, humble man who went through many difficulties in his life and overcame them. He encouraged the congregation to emulate St Joseph.

After the Mass, the parishioners adjourned to the pastoral centre for breakfast. Waiting in surprise for Fr Dass was a birthday cake to celebrate his birthday, which fell a day later, on May 2.

After the cutting of the cake, a sing-a-long session was conducted. This was followed by a session of games that those present sportingly participated in.

The celebrations stretched on until lunch time. Thanks to the Parish Human Development Committee, the Labour Day event was an obvious success.

CHEMOR: The Chapel of St Anthony in Chemor, just 10 km from Ipoh, is a shining example of the Father’s Heart of God and His parental faithfulness to his children.

This tiny chapel which is encompassed by a Chinese temple and a mosque nearby is little known and hidden away from the main road of Chemor.

Yet it has survived for so many years despite being neglected and almost left by the wayside, due to a lack of priests to attend to the pastoral needs of the small Catholic community comprising about 40 families, who are mainly Chinese and Indians.
