In the newsletter message, parish priest, Msgr Stephen Liew stressed that Mission Sunday responsibility requires courage and strength to proclaim Christ as the Redeemer of every human person.

Thousands attend St Anne's feastday in BM
August 05 , 2009

BUKIT MERTAJAM :St Anne’s annual novena and feastday celebrations carried the theme Deepening our Discipleship through a Spirituality of Communion. The novena began on July 17, together with the Launching of the Year of the Priest by Bishop Anthony Selvanayagam.

Throughout the nine-day celebrations, priests from all over the diocese as well as from other dioceses celebrated the Mass, focused on the theme and shared on our discipleship.

St Anne, BM celebrates second event

PENANG: The parish of St Anne, Bukit Mertajam has chosen the Feast of St Paul and Fathers’ Day as the second Special Event to bring about unity and love in our parish community.

A multi-lingual Mass was celebrated on 21 June by parish priest Msgr Stephen Liew with Fr Clement Pereira concelebrating.

A video on the life of St Paul was played in the church half an hour before mass. An exhibition on St Paul was displayed at the entrance of the church a day prior to this special event. Read More
St Anne's BM children animate Mass

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Children from the Church of St Anne animated the 7.00pm Mass on May 23 They were the “choir of the day”. The commentator was a young primary school boy.

Two other children did the first and second readings. The children also presented the offerings. They were also the Hospitality ministers.

Before the final hymn, parish priest Msgr Stephen Liew congratulated the children for their energetic spirit and the CLOW (Children Liturgy of Word) ministry for training them. “They are the future of the church,” he said.

Francesca Wong, from the CLOW ministry said, “They are God’s gift and we just showed their talents. Thanks to all the parents who gave their support, by sending these young ones for training.” —
Evangelising through line dancing

BUKIT MERTJAM: The Women’s League of the Church of St Anne had an Easter Fellowship with Non- Catholic Line Dancers at St Joachim’s Hall on Easter Sunday Night with the objective of introducing Christ to Non-Catholics.

St Anne’s Women’s League Line Dancing Instructor, Adeline Lee welcomed about 150 participants to the Easter Line Dancing Jam. The reason for celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on Easter was explained in Mandarin.

The President, Julie Thor, started with an opening prayer. Some hymns were played and the participants had light snack contributed by those present before proceeding to the line dance jam. The session ended with smiles of satisfaction, sweatsoaked T-shirts and tired-out feet. An evening well-spent by one and all.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: There was an overwhelming response from the parishioners of the Church of St Anne at the session on Deepening our Discipleship and social issues session by Bro John D’Cruz.

He began by dividing the participants into small groups of five to share the topic Faith in Jesus. A very lively discussion followed in view of the current happenings in Malaysia. Bro John reminded the participants that there were such situations even during Christ’s time on earth. Read More
BM's seniors meet the Evergreens of Ipoh
December 14, 2008

IPOH: The St Anne’s Seniors Club (SAS) of Bukit Mertajam were invited to the Annual Dinner of the Evergreens in Ipoh. About 40 members left BM by bus at 12 noon, led by the chairman Joseph Lim.

Upon reaching Ipoh, they were welcomed by the members of the Evergreens at St Michael Church. The visitors were invited to The Oak, which is the Evergreen’s club house, situated in the church grounds for tea and fellowship.

Some members enjoyed a game of mahjong and snooker and some watched karaoke VCD of some oldies.

At 5.30pm, evening Mass was celebrated at the church by Fr Anthony Chong. After Mass, dinner was served at Peter Pang Hall, next to the church. The hall was packed with members of the Evergreens and family members and also parishioners of St Michael’s church. Four tables were booked for members of SAS BM and there were some guests from Batu Gajah as well. Parish priest Fr Michael Cheah and Fr Anthony Chong were also present at the dinner.

In between the eight-course dinner, guests were entertained with line dancing and singing. The SAS members also sang some popular golden oldies.

There were lucky draws with fantastic prizes throughout the dinner. The SAS members were very lucky that night, as they won many of the lucky draws. They left the dinner with such great memories and great friendship.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The blessing of the cemetery took place on Sunday, Nov 2 at 11.30am. There was no Mass at the cemetery as All Souls Day was on a Sunday and the usual Sunday Masses were held at the church.

Msgr Stephen Liew led the blessing, followed by sprinkling of holy water at each grave as he walked around the St Anne’s BM cemetery.

Mobile Clinic for refugees at BM

PENANG: A Mobile Clinic catering for refugees in the Bukit Mertajam area is set to launch at the Church of St Anne.

The Diocesan Migrant Ministry (DMM) of the Penang Office for Human Development (POHD) assisted the St Anne’s PHDC by organising training sessions and sourcing for the funds to run the project. Read More

St Anne's feast, BM draws thousands

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The recent St Anne's feast ended with much praise to the Lord, for the good weather on July 26. The theme for this year was Deepening our Discipleship: Through the Word of God.

The novena began on July 18, with priests from various parishes sharing on how the Word of God transforms our lives.

The climax of the celebration was on July 26. It was also the sixth anniversary since the opening of this church in year 2002. Bishop Paul Tan SJ was the main celebrant for the Mass with Frs Stanislaus Pillai, Simon Ee and Michael Dass concelebrating. Read More

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A special formation session for BEC core teams of St Anne’s Parish was facilitated by Agatha Tan, from the Parish of Jesus Caritas,  Kuala Lumpur, on March 1 and 2.

The main objective of the course was,  through practical exercises, to help members foster better relationship with one another. The exercises would  help to lead them to an awareness of self and others, to acquire communication skills, to work as a team, to acquire Christian leadership styles and skills, to learn how to make decisions and set values/ priorities in life, whilst other creative exercises would help build BECs. Blood donation drive at St Anne, BM

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The society of St Vincent de Paul of Bukit Mertajam recently organised a blood donation drive.
About 70 people registered for this drive that saves lives. During the Sunday Mass, Msgr Stephen Liew encouraged everyone to donate blood and he joked that by saving a life, and new blood circulating in our life, we can look and feel ‘younger’ mainly because the blood that we donate could save someone. Catechists called to echo God's word

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A second session for catechists was held at the Church of St Anne. The speaker Dr Steven Selvaraju, shared this one-day session with the theme Sowing the Seeds of Faith. Dr Steven holds a Doctorate in Sacred Theology with specialisation in Catechetics and Youth Ministry from the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome. He is also the Director for our Malaysian Catechetical Syllabus.

Catechists from the Nativity of Beloved Virgin Mary, Butterworth and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Kulim also joined this one-day programme. Dr Steven started the session by reading a passage from the Bible, ‘The sower and the seeds,’ from Mark 4:3-9. Read More
Making faith sharing come alive

The faith sharers reflected on their role as faith educators/sharers and their R.E.A.L. (Respecting Encouraging, Affirming Loving) calling as catechists. BUKIT MERTAJAM: Children from the Catechism classes of St Anne’s Parish celebrated Bible Sunday with fun-filled activities on July 8 at the Parish Centre. The event was organised by the Catechetical Team and facilitated by the parish youth.

The pre-school and primary school children from Primary One to Four had their colouring competition in their respective classes. The children were allocated an hour to show off their talents. The winners from each class were then presented with prizes for their effort. Read More

Pilgrims to the feast and novena will be treated to an exhibition of exquisite wood carvings, statues, figurines and framed precious stones in the images of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Mary, St. Anne and other saints. CAMERON HIGHLANDS: An annual retreat cum outing for the Children’s Liturgy Of the Word (CLOW) of the Church of St Anne was organised in Cameron Highlands from May 26 to 28 at Rainforest Apartment.

Some CLOW members of Sacred Church, Kulim and Church of Nativity, Butterworth also attended the retreat.
Sr Regina Cheah, IJS facilitated the retreat. With her wealth of experience and knowledge, she taught the group to appreciate the Holy Spirit and how to pray, mainly through meditation using their five senses while making full use of the Bible for references. Charity Food and Dance Carnival in aid of St Anne's Haemodialysis Centre

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The St Anne’s Haemodialysis Centre is organising a 2007 Charity Food and Dance Carnival on Apr 14 to raise funds for the centre which needs around RM264,000 a year to run.

The centre, the one and only such facility in the country run under the auspices of the Catholic church, currently has 29 patients undergoing dialysis treatment. Read More
St Michael's League, BM visits home

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The St Michael’s League (SML) of the Church of St Anne recently visited a home. The project was headed by Peter Sylvester together with 10 members.

A week before the project was held; the committee members visited the home and enquired on what items were most needed. The home, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh caters about 45 mentally challenged people from the age of 4 to 45. The caretakers listed some daily use products, such as dry food and drinks and items like diapers, soap, etc.

PENANG: The St Anne’s Church Bukit Mertajam Faith Formation Group organised a Development and Outdoor Living Camp for the Standard 5 and 6 children.

The three-day, two-night camp was held at the church grounds. Close to 40 children participated in this camp.

The importance of the Eucharist in our lives

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A one-day session on the Eucharist was held at the Church of St Anne.

“Whatever we celebrate in a Sacrament, we include the Liturgy. Without the Liturgy, the church is dead,” explained Fr Francis Andrew who gave the session together with Fr Michael Dass.

Liturgy is divided into three major parts: the spoken words, gestures and actions. The liturgy also includes the celebration of the seven Sacraments and the Liturgy is the public official worship of the Church. The Liturgy comes from the Passover Meal, which is found in the Gospel.

Bukit Mertajam Tamil Catholics celebrate Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Tamil Catholic community of Bukit Mertajam recently celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The feast was celebrated in their Alma chapel on Sept 16, with Fr Maiccal Sinappan as the celebrant.

In the homily, Fr Maiccal touched on the Second Reading, taken from St James, where Christians are encouraged to be good examples for others, but he challenged the people on this statement.

"There are many Catholics I know that like to preach and give advice to people, but they do not like to share their resources with the needy, whom Jesus is asking us to reach out to."

Among those present were Archbishop Murphy Pakiam, Archbishop Emeritus Anthony Soter Fernandez, Bishop Antony Selvanayagam, Bishop Anthony Lee Kok Hin (from Miri), Msgr James Gnanapiragasam, Msgr Sebastian Francis and Msgr Liew’s three special friends who were classmates during their time at the  seminary: Fr Ambrose Vaz, Fr John Lau and Fr Stephen Lim.

PENANG: The annual Thanksgiving Dinner was held on Aug 27 at Dewan St Anne for all the volunteers of St Anne’s feast.

This dinner was held as an appreciation to all the volunteers of the recent week-long celebration. About 700 people attended this dinner. The volunteers were not only parishioners from St Anne’s church but also from various churches around the Penang diocese who contributed their services for the celebration.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: About 25 students with excellent results received awards from the parish priest, here in St Anne’s Church.

These were students who excelled with straight As in the major examinations: UPSR, PMR & SPM. These students were awarded cash prizes by Msgr Stephen Liew during the Sunday Mass on July 9.

This is the first time students who excelled in the major examinations were awarded in this parish. There were 10 students each who scored straight As for the UPSR and PMR examinations, and three bright students for SPM.

Rumours Fail To Keep Devoted Crowd Away

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The crowd at the St Annes Feast here this year during the last week of July was noticeably lesser than in previous years.

Despite appeals by Parish Priest Msgr Stephen Liew to pilgrims during the Novena Masses throughout the week not to believe a rumour going around that a tsunami 10 times greater than the one which hit Penang on Dec 26, 2004 would hit Penang that weekend, the feast this year was obviously less attended.

Challenged To Work With The Poor.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The parishioners of the Church of St Anne were challenged to work with the poor. They were helped by the screening of the movie In The Name of Gods Poor, a movie depicting the life of Mother Teresa and her works with the poor.

Fr Alexander Edwin, pic told those gathered that there are people here who do similar work like Mother Theresa. Fr Alexander said that there is a home that cares for the sick in Mak Mandin. Sr Collete has been running the home for some time. She also works and lives with the poor. He challenged the people to go and visit the place one day and spread the news.

BUKIT MARTAJAM: Bishop Antony Selvanayagams 4-day pastoral visit to the Church of St Anne culminated in a 3-language Eucharistic Celebration on Sunday, June 12. Close to 1000 parishioners turned up. The con-celebrants were Msgr Stephen Liew and Fr Francis Chao.

In his homily, Bishop Selva urged the congregation to listen to the Word of God seriously. "A good number of us come to church, gather together, to listen to the Word of God. Somehow the significance of this Word of God proclaimed is not well-understood. Just imagine, after three readings, when asked what God said, many are not able to recall much. Based on my observations, experience, dialogues and questioning, I notice that a good number of us simply do not listen seriously to the Word of God."

PPC Members Reminded Of The Importance Of Formation.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Bishop Antony Selvanayagam made a pastoral visit to the parish of St Anne from June 9 to 12.

He met with members of the Tamil Apostolate team first and then with members of the Chinese Apostolate team for a dialogue session.

On Friday morning, Bishop Selva paid a visit to Pusat Haemodialisis St Anne. The chairman, Michael Ng, was on hand to brief the Bishop about the centre, including the latest addition of a machine and its set-up which caters for kidney patients with hepatitis B and C. Bishop Selva told the committee members to keep up the good work, advising them not to be disheartened when donations did not come as initially expected.

As part of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Diocese of Penang, a spiritual formation with the theme Fundamental Conversion was held at the Parish of St Anne recently.

The 4-hour session was conducted in three languages by members of the Penang Diocesan AsIPA Team and some guest speakers. About 110 parishioners, mainly BEC leaders and those involved in the church ministries/services turned up.
