A church in transition

ALOR SETAR: Was it an earthquake?  Was it a storm? No. This is the very basic physical structure of a church stripped to the barest minimum to be renovated.  Marie Chua, a parishioner, stood transfixed at the sight of the stripped structure of the church. She said, “This scene is very touching. This is the Lord’s house. We have to restore it as fast as possible.”

The sixty-over years old church, constructed on a shoe-string budget,  at Jalan Langgar, the main road of the town, has been the house of the Lord to about 756 Catholics in Alor Star and the nearby towns until pieces of the ceilings started to fall, tiles leaked rain water, termites munched on wooden structures  and cracks appeared on the walls. The church has also taken lots of beating from weathering, metal fatigue,  and vibrations from the main road, 20 metres away from its walls.

The sight of the parishioners wading into the church after a downpour is pathetic. When St Michael’s National Secondary School was reconstructed in 1985, the land on which the school sits was raised, and thus the lowered church compound suffered unending floodings.

The Parish Priest, Fr Jude Miranda, together with the church's Finance Committee and the Parish Pastoral Council have initiated a fundraising project to renovate the church and to raise the church compound.

James Lau, the Parish Pastoral Chairman, commented that, as a small parish, it is hard to raise the required amount. Moreover, the cost has escalated with the petrol price hike and the subsequent increase in the cost of buiding materials. He hopes that Catholics who were born and raised in Alor Star, those who were baptized here or married here and presently residing elsewhere, will take this opportunity and play their noble part. With escalating cost, renovation work should be completed as soon as possible. A Thanksgiving Mass will be offered for all who have lent a hand.
