ALOR SETAR: On Aug 31, the parishioners of St Michael's church gathered to remember and celebrate God's faithfulness and love which he has showered on them. They prayed and looked forward to work according to God’s plans for the country and to continue to observe his commandments in perfect freedom. The theme for this Merdeka celebration was to love tenderly, act justly and walk humbly so as to glorify God and live in unity and harmony with one another.
The Eucharistic celebration began at 5.30pm and was presided over by Fr Peter Shyu with Parish priest Fr Jude Miranda concelebrating. This celebration also marked the farewell for Fr Peter Shyu who is retiring and will be leaving for China after serving for 50 years as a priest.
Those parishioners born in 1957 led the entrance procession carrying the Malaysian as well as the State flag. Six little “angels” followed and while dancing scattered sweet smelling flowers along the aisle.
The chairman from the Chinese apostolate, Francis Lim gave a speech on the life of Fr Shyu and his many achievements during his tour of duty here. Fr Jude then accompanied Fr Shyu to the centre of the Altar to receive flowers from the children of St Michael.
Lucas, on behalf of the Tamil apostolate and James Lau ( PPC chairman) on behalf of the whole parish each presented a token to Fr Shyu as appreciation for his services rendered to St Michael's parish. The Chinese youths then sang two Chinese songs specially dedicated to Fr Shyu.
It was then Fr Shyu's turn to say a few words to the parishioners. In his speech he thanked everyone who made it a very memorable farewell for him.
Fr Jude thanked Fr Shyu for his initiative, dedication and tireless efforts in ensuring that a proper building was built for the Parish house as well as the catechism centre. Fr Jude also mentioned that Fr Shyu was a very responsible priest who was always trying to save every little cent for the church even to the extent of ignoring his own personal needs.
