Be a source of encouragement to all |

IPOH: “Be a source of support and encouragement” — this was continuously emphasized by Fr Philip Lai CSsR at the Parish Assembly of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH).

The parish assembly, held on Sunday Nov 9, saw a turnout of about 144 people representing various ministries.
Fr Lai welcomed Thomas Chua, a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Team, and also Fr Eugene Fernandez CSsR who had just returned from overseas. Fr Lai then announced next year’s theme Living the Spirituality of Communion, and kept reminding the people how important it was to support and encourage each other.
The assembly was divided into two sessions: the Presentation and Evaluation, and the Planning of Upcoming Events (for 2009). Conducted by Andrew Anthony, the Presentation and Evaluation was based on a questionnaire which had been given out to the ministries and BECs. The results of the questionnaire were then analysed using the S.W.O.T. technique.
Feedback from the BECs revealed that there was a lack of passion in serving the BECs, and hence the problem of having good, dynamic leaders. Besides this, the BECs seemed to agree that worldly attractions were in some way diverting people from (BEC) gatherings. Along the lines, the concern of reaching out to lapse Catholics also arose.
After a short interval, the people were divided into groups to brainstorm — as the second session was about planning two BEC and two Parish events for the coming year (2009). Soon after, the groups presented their suggestions.
Many interesting events were mentioned, namely: organising talent/cultural shows, outreach programmes to old folk’s homes and orphanages, and reaching out to lapsed Catholics by visiting them and informing them about events in the parish. There were also suggestions on having more activities for the youths, as well as opening events to non-Catholics and non-Christians.
