IPOH: Children and youth brought joy and merriment at the BEC Family Day at St Michael’s Church on June 21.
The focus of the event was to include as many children and youth as possible, rather than just the adults.
The simplicity of the games and fewer stalls allowed parents to spend time with their children, instead of being involved in too many things. The other pleasant surprise was that it was affordable for all — things were at low prices so that everyone could participate and there wasn’t the usual tussle to sell as many things as possible. The focus wasn’t on money. Many games cost RM1 for two tries.
The parish BEC Family Day started at 11.00am after the Mandarin Mass. Many children participated in the colouring contest, fancy dress and games. The prizes were small, yet it was the joy of participating that counted for many of these children and their parents.
The Youth group set up simple games such as “hit the cans” and “light all the candles with a matchstick.” The prizes were simply a packet of sweets but there were still many takers for these events. The most popular game was the throwing of darts, which had prizes like packets of tissue paper, key chains, water tumblers and a teddy bear as the grand prize.
Other games included Sand Art, a Lucky draw (which was free), count the stamps and face painting with tattoos. Food was also simple, like char kway teow at RM3, chee cheong fun at RM1.50 and a full lunch meal at RM3, besides the usual canteen fare.
The cooking demonstration of Red Wine Chicken by Theresa Tan, attracted many people, as did Murukku by S. Mikaela.
The fancy dress contest themed “costumes in the year 3,000” attracted children from age five to 12. Many came up with earth-inspired themes rather than high-tech costumes, and one even carried a toy dog to show how she would like the animal to be protected.
Sashnita Rina Robert Tan, seven, won first prize with her confidence in showing her sunflower inspired dress, followed by Catherine T-eh Cher Mayne, six, who wore a leaf costume and Natalie Boo, nine, with her many-flowered skirt lined with moss. Each won a small trophy, a small gift, a RM10 cash voucher and a refund of RM5 in coupons.
The BEC Poster competition showed the creative skills of the BECs, which had to show their BEC events, goals and members.
It was a good way to let others know about the activities of the BECs in St Michael’s Church as well as involve the BEC members to contribute towards their BEC. St Francis of Assissi BEC won first prize for its artistic creation and informative layout, followed by St Anne’s BEC and St Jerome (Pengkalen) BEC.
At the end of it all, many parents agreed it was a very different Family Day, one that didn’t leave them frazzled with too many events to cope with and giving them time to spend with their families.
