SILIBIN: BEC members of Summer 2, of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes OLOL), participated in a Mass at the home of Mr and Mrs Henrey. Fr Andrew Manikam OFM Cap, pic, assistant parish priest of the Church of St Francis of Assisi, was the celebrant.
As the clock struck 7.30pm, singing the opening hymn, everyone rose to wlecome the priest.
The objective of the BEC Mass was to explain to the parishioners of OLOL the meaning of the various gestures and responses throughout the mass. These Christian-Catholic gestures have become so habitual that we have failed to realize the true meaning of why we do them.
Fr Andrew explained why we bless ourselves when we enter the church. He said that the reason is so that we can acknowledge that we are children of God and to remind ourselves of our baptism. When we bless ourselves we should look at the crucifix to remind ourselves that Jesus died for our sins.
Fr Andrew taught the members how to pray the Nicene Creed and also the Apostles Creed meaningfully. He shed some light on how to choose the appropriate gospel readings.
The Homily is the priest’s explaination of the gospel whereas a sermon means that a priest is sharing on a random subject.
Fr Andrew also went on to explain why we have the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. As the Mass continued Fr Andrew allowed brief interventions for questions about the Mass and also about the Christian faith.
That day, many gained much knowledge about their faith and also the true meaning of being a Christian journeying with Christ.
We are dependant on the Lord; that is why we come to Church; that is why we receive the Eucharist; that is why we pray for ourselves and our loved ones. Christ is our strength, he gives us true life.
