Belonging to BECs is Penang's 2008 target |

IPOH: During the recent Parish Pastoral Assembly held at the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, parish priest Fr Joe Stephen spoke on the target for 2008.
Fr Joe told the Assembly, “The Annual Target for 2008 will be for all in the Diocese of Penang to be aware that each one should belong to a BEC and no group or organisation replaces the BEC. The overall strategy for consolidation should include three parish-level events, two BEC gatherings (Eucharistic celebrations and Fellowship) and to strengthen and consolidate BECs by having 10 to 15 families in each BEC.”
Fr Joe then spoke on the six strategies proposed for the year 2008 to help in re-committing ourselves as clergy, religious and laity to the mission for the local Church. We must not cater only for the majority but must constantly endeavour to look after the minority groups (some vernacular language groups), the foreign workers or those who are unfortunately marginalised.
The Assembly then went into group discussions on the major events for the year 2008: Feast of Corpus Christi which OMPH will be organising as a combined celebration with St. Michael's Church of Our Lady of Lourdes Ipoh next year, Parish Feastday and Sports Carnival/Family Day.
The groups were also requested to propose a renewal programme for next year such as the Parish Renewal Experience (PRE), Life in the Spirit Seminar (LSS), Catholic Faith Exploration I (CAFÉ), ALPHA and perhaps other renewal programmes.
The groups then reported to the Assembly their findings and suggestions. The Parish Pastoral Council would study all these and formulate the OMPH pastoral programme for next year, later.
The Assistant Parish Priest, Fr Philip Lai, CSsR in his closing address reminded the Assembly: “It is important for us never to be discouraged; we must be ever willing to make sacrifices. I hope more and more will come forward to serve. Never forget where possible we must think of accommodating the non- Christians among us.”
