Birthday joy for Fr Charles Chin

IPOH: Fr Charles Chin’s 63rd birthday celebration was both joyful and purpose-filled. Joined by relatives and friends who hosted the dinner at a restaurant recently, Fr Chin warmly welcomed each and every one, and spent time chatting with all.

When asked what was his secret of looking youthful, he said: “Every night I surrender to the Lord, and die to myself. It’s the art of letting go,” he said.

Fr Charles also reminded those present that the art of living is based on the art of letting go and surrendering to the Lord. He thanked and blessed all those present, giving a thought especially to the migrant workers, and the Orang Asli, who hold a special place in his heart, even though they were not present at the celebration.

Fr Chin is now based at the Church of St Mary, Tapah, and is administrator of the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in Tanjung Malim, Perak and St Christopher’s Chapel, in Slim River. He ministers to the increasing number of parishioners there, both Chinese and Indian, but  is also spot on at noticing a largely forgotten group — the Indonesian migrant workers, who work in estates and jungles, and the Orang Asli
He attends to these Orang Asli and Indonesians, going on visits at least once a month, and celebrating Masses for them each Sunday. For those who are unable to come out to church, Fr Chin goes into the jungles, to meet them and pray with them.

“They are very good Christians, being prayerful and devoted to God. During the month of the rosary, they said the rosary as a group every day,” he said.

On Christmas day, seven Masses will be celebrated in Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin for the Orang Asli and the Indonesians. After that, he will spend time visiting the Orang Asli and Indonesians to share in their happiness and celebration of Christmas.

“In the bible, it says, a thousand years is like one day for God, and God is the same yesterday, today and forever. I thank the Lord for the opportunity to meet and serve so many people,” he said.
