Bishop Selva: Please pray for our nation

PENANG: “I urge you to pray for the country,” appealed the Bishop of Penang, Rt Rev Antony Selvanayagam, “After March 8, a lot of things have been happening. Let us pray for our country, our leaders. Pray that God will send leaders who will answer our needs for greater justice and freedom.”

That was the passionate appeal from the Bishop right at the beginning of the Eucharistic Celebration to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption at the Church of the Assumption, Penang on Aug 15.

About 700 parishioners from all over the island attended the trilingual Mass which was celebrated by the Bishop Selva and concelebrated by Archbishop Emeritus Soter Fernandez, Fr Michael Thoo (parish priest), Fr Francis Anthony and Fr Henry Rajoo.

In his homily, Bishop Selva gave an outline of why we are celebrating the Feast of the Assumption. He said that 59 years ago, the Church had officially declared that Mary was taken into heaven, body and soul to be with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. However, before this declaration was made, the Church had already sensed that Mary must be with her Son, both body and soul in heaven. That is why we are celebrating the feast.

“Why is the Church so convinced of Mary’s assumption?” asked Bishop Selva, “The conviction came because Mary was associated with Jesus all the while, journeying with Jesus during his most joyful and painful moments.”

Referring to the first reading, Bishop Selva said, St Paul gave a good insight into the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus was the second Adam, who died and rose from the dead to a new life. St Paul qualified this new life as not only belonging to the Church but also belonging to the person of Christ.

In order for us to ‘belong to Christ,’ the Bishop said that we need to be aware of his presence, be sensitive to what he says and allow him into our lives — this is what brings about new life in Mary.

“If Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven, are we also going to be assumed body and soul into heaven?” the Bishop asked the puzzled congregation.

Why not, he said, if we follow closely the life of Mary. In the gospel, in Mary’s Magnificat, Bishop Selva pointed out that Mary was praising God for everything that happened in her life. She attributes everything that happened in her life to God. Thus, the Bishop said that attributing everything in our lives to God is one way of preparing for our own assumption.

He ended his homily with the strong message for everyone to ponder on whether they feel they belong to Jesus and have they let Jesus into their lives. It is this belonging, he said, that ultimately assures us of our assumption and redemption.

Bishop Selva also gave a homily in Tamil, followed by a homily in Mandarin by Fr. Henry Rajoo.

There was a simple fellowship after Mass, where everyone mingled around on this joyous feast day.
