SUNGAI PETANI: Christmas joy was ushered in early by members of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Sungai Petani, who brought cheer to 31 needy families at its annual Christmas party for the poor.
They treated the guests numbering about 100 people including children, to a sumptuous meal of local delicacies including fried rice, meehoon, chapati, curry puffs, jellies and cakes.
The celebration began with carolling by members of the Society, after which there were games for the children at the Church of Christ the King. There was also a cake-cutting event for those celebrating their birthday in December.
The families received gifts comprising rice, noodles and other foodstuff. Society president James Patrick said the party was an annual affair to bring the joy of the season to the poor families, which the society had adopted.
The society supports 31 needy families in Kedah’s Kuala Muda district by providing them monthly rations of foodstuff as well as medical and educational aid.
