Celebrating 50 years of married life
KULIM: The parishioners of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus who gathered to celebrate the Tamil Pentecost Eucharist Celebration on Sunday, June 4 were privileged to also witness the renewal of wedding vows of Mr Rajoo Selvanayakam and Mdm Bakiamary (seated centre in picture left) on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
The main celebrant at the Eucharistic celebration was none other than the couple’s son, Fr Henry Rajoo. Concelebrating with him was Fr Francis Anthony, both of whom had come from Penang for the auspicious occasion.
In his opening address Fr Henry remarked, “A couple can be married for many years but not all of them live up to a ripe old age to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary.”
It was indeed a touching moment when the couple renewed their marriage vows in front of their own son, Fr Henry, now a priest. Mr Rajoo found it difficult to hold back tears of joy while his wife of fifty years was, as usual, steady. After the renewal of vows they exchanged garlands while the choir sang the Anniversary song. This was followed by loud applause from the congregation.
Fr Henry blessed his parents and thanked everyone present for the love that they had shown to his parents all these years.
After the Mass, the congregation adjourned to the Parish hall for a sumptuous meal. A senior parishioner Sowri Muthu commented, “They kept their marriage vows and journeyed together through good times and bad and overcame many challenges.”
Another parishioner, Theresa Lewis said, “This is the first time I am witnessing such an event. Fifty Golden years! It is really a blessing from God. I have known Bakiamary Aunty to be a woman of prayer and this must have kept their marriage sacred to this day.” Many felt happy that the Golden Anniversary of their good friends coincided with the celebration of Pentecost.
Mr and Mrs Rajoo were married exactly fifty years ago to the day, June 4, 1956. Mr Rajoo went to India to find his bride. The couple has nine children who all came back to their hometown to celebrate the happy occasion.
