PENANG: The St Anne’s Church Bukit Mertajam Faith Formation Group organised a Development and Outdoor Living Camp for the Standard 5 and 6 children.

The three-day, two-night camp was held at the church grounds. Close to 40 children participated in this camp.
Parish Priest, Msgr Stephen Liew and Assistant Parish Priest, Fr Simon Ee gave tremendous support for this camp. The camp was themed Children of the Future Today. This camp was co-organised by the St Anne’s Church Youth Group.

The idea was to introduce the children to an outdoor camp as many children nowadays are less exposed to nature.

Jimmy Khor was the camp coordinator while Desmond Ignatius, representing the Youth Group, was the camp commandant. Many interesting events and activities were planned for the children throughout the three days.
The success of the camp was due to the tireless efforts of the committee which comprised 20 youths and volunteers.

The children started streaming to the church at 4pm on a Friday with their parents. Some were seen coming with heavy luggage. One parent claimed that this was the first time his son would be staying away from home.
After registration, there was  a BBQ, followed by campfire. Due to the unexpected rain, the campfire had to be done indoors. In the following three days, there were Station Games and Sharing Sessions by the parish priests. Every event was coordinated by the youths who were assisted by volunteers.

The Scouts from BM High School conducted a session with the children on how to survive in the jungle and taught them the different types of knots.

The Red Crescent troops from SMK Taman Sejahtera were also invited for the First Aid session. The children were taught how to treat burns and cuts and the many types of bandages.

A talentime was also organised. The children showed off their talents by presenting some famous Bible stories. The parents really enjoyed this session.

On the final day, prizes were given to best teams for every session. Souvenirs were given away and lunch was provided for both the children and the parents before they bade farewell.
