IPOH: Forty-three children received their first Holy Communion at St Michael’s Church on Nov 16.

It was interesting to see how the children perceived their experience of receiving Jesus in their hearts. For many of them, it was such an exciting and happy day as ten-year-old Theodatus Leong Zheng Tao put it , “I pray at night, but mostly, I love to speak to Jesus about anything, so I feel happy,” he said.

For Theodatus, the start of his heightened awareness of God began when his father Patrick Leong, was baptized in 2003. Theodatus and his younger sister, Xi Nou, were also baptized into the Catholic church some years later.
Charmaine Phong said she was nervous but excited at the same time to “meet Jesus” in her heart.

Michelle Ann Peter was just plain excited. “I pray the Our Father and Hail Mary, every night before I sleep,” she said.

In his homily, Fr Rudy Wong CSsR, focused on exercising our faith and the relationship that exists between God and his children. Referring to Psalm 2:7, he said faith  was not external like Judaism but more like the Samaritan who helped a stranger in need.

“The faith that Jesus speaks of is like the man with a grateful heart, like one of the ten lepers who were cleansed. Come sacramentally to God if you can, but if you cannot receive Jesus because you are deep in mortal sin, then you should do everything in your power to redress the past.

“Know that we cannot hurt God because of the deep intensity of his love for us as his children. It is important to seek God and surrender to Him as shown by the children receiving first Holy Communion.

“These children are teaching us what we first received so many years ago. We have forgotten this when we are open to the world and its temptations. As children we were told never to forget Jesus and to come to Him and surrender to H
