IPOH: The onset of Lunar New Year was welcomed with a Eucharistic Celebration  on Chinese New Year’s Eve and  New Year’s Day, at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church here.

As the most colourful and joyous of all Chinese festivals, the Chinese New Year is also a time of  reunion, thanksgiving, hope and a new beginning, said OMPH assistant parish priest Fr Philip Lai, CsSR  who gave the homily on New Year’s Day.

The parish community at OMPH prepared for the event by decorating the church with bright red decorations, expressing good fortune, red and yellow flowers, and flower buds of the pussy willow which signify the fresh and invigorating hopes for a prosperous new year. They also took time to chat with friends and relatives after Mass.
As zodiac animals have been always been a part of New Year festivities, Fr Lai touched on the characteristics of the animal sign for this year — the Year of the Rat.

The Rat, he pointed out, was known for being endowed with a pioneering and enthusiastic spirit and had a willingness to sacrifice. It was also practical and hardworking, meticulous, creative and versatile.

“We should use the examples of the Rat, to become hardworking and creative, in helping out in the parish and BECs,” he said.

“The Rat is known for its ability to survive and thrive anywhere despite difficult conditions. We should take this as an example to follow through in our charitable work to help others,” he said.

Later, after Mass, OMPH parish priest Fr Joseph Stephen, CsSR, blessed several baskets of oranges which were for distribution to the parishioners, and distributed angpow to children and senior citizens.
