City parishioners' pilgrimage to OLOL |

PENANG: Parishioners from City Parish experienced a 'mini retreat' pilgrimage at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL), Ipoh on Sept 1. This pilgrimage retreat was organised by Anthony Rodgers, especially for those who are unable to go to Lourdes for the 150 anniversary of the Apparition of Our Lady at Lourdes, France.
The pilgrims were first directed to the grotto of Our Lady to ‘touch the rock’ and say a prayer. This is the first step of the ‘three stations of the Lourdes Pilgrimage Prayer’. Then they went into the hall to listen to Rodgers’ talk on Vocation. Rodgers presented the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs chart showing the stages in the life of a person. Rodgers said that the chart can be used to gauge our vocation based on our values and needs. He asked us to reflect on which stage we were at.
After the talk, the pilgrims went into the church for personal prayer. Then there was an inner healing session, after which they went for the second step of the ‘three stations of the Lourdes Pilgrimage Prayer’, i.e. ‘drink and wash in Lourdes water’.
A tent divided into three sections had been erected by the side of the church. The 1st section is where the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes is, for pilgrims to pray; 2nd section, the pilgrims were offered the Lourdes water to drink and the last section is where they can wash their face and feet with the Lourdes water.
Holy water is available for the pilgrims to bring home. Plastic containers to hold the holy water were on sale, so were other souvenirs like T-shirts and door knob hangers.
The pilgrims then proceeded back to the grotto to light a candle and pray. They also offered up petitions.
It was then time for the Eucharistic Celebration, which was celebrated by Fr Joe Matthews OFM Cap. Explanation about the Mass, e.g. why we say certain prayers and why we do what we do in the Mass, was explained by Fr Matthews throughout the Mass.
Fr Matthews informed that attending the Eucharist is part of the pilgrimage. To complete the pilgrimage, the sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist must be included. He said that these two sacraments are important to help the pilgrims grow in faith.
After the Eucharistic Celebration, the pilgrims were treated to a buffet lunch. Before they left, all were given a ‘gift pack’ — St Bernadette prayer card, two small plastic bottles of holy water and anointing oil.
Annette, one of the pilgrims from City Parish said, “The pilgrimage was an enlightenment to me as this was the first time I experienced such a thing.”
Maria, meanwhile, expressed that she took the whole pilgrimage as a prayer, whereas Martha was all praise for the organizers, saying it was very well organized and it was a spiritually filled experience for her.
Rodgers shared that the Pilgrimage experience started in March this year and so far about 50 groups had come to the church to experience the pilgrimage. Apart from groups in Perak, they had groups from up North from Sg Petani and Alor Setar, and also from KL. He said that in October, there will be a group from Singapore.
Rodgers also said that their Church’s BECs take part in the pilgrimage every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month.
City Parish would like to thank the parish priest of OLL church, Fr Bernard Paul and the parishioners, especially the organisers of the pilgrimage, for the warm hospitality they received and for an unforgettable pilgrimage experience.
