BUTTERWORTH: The NBVM Church Coffee Morning is an initiation by the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Parish Foreign Workers Service Centre volunteers.
It has been actively involved in organizing coffee morning every Sunday after Mass since the year 2005.
Also popularly known as “Canteen”, this coffee morning was initiated to provide delicious and nutritious home cooked food for the parish catechism children and families.
It was also established to overcome any unavoidable accidents, when parishioners had to cross the busy trunk road leading to the ferry terminal to a nearby coffee shop for their breakfast.
Home cooked food such as thosai with chicken and dhal curry, fried beehoon, nasi lemak, fried rice, pastries and buns, hot and cold drinks, and many other types of food are prepared by the volunteers themselves starting very early on Sunday morning.
Juliana Wee, the person in-charge, said all proceeds from the sales are donated to the church. At the end of the year, a financial statement will be put up on the notice board for the attention of the parishioners.
Although the income is a very small amount, the volunteers decided to continue their services with joy as they believe it was a calling from GOD. It is opened to any interested group who wants to run the coffee mornings for their individual purpose.
It is also inviting individuals who want to help.
The volunteers, a mixed age group of ladies and men wish to thank the Parish Priest, parishioners, sponsors and all well wishers for the cooperation and support given throughout the years.
Francis a/l Savirimuthu, a parishioner of this church and a regular customer, said, “I would like to convey my appreciation and heartiest wishes to our volunteers from the parish for their sacrifice towards the up keeping and maintenance voluntarily. Their service has benefited a lot of our parishioners.
“Previously we used to go to Butterworth town, which is about 5km from the church for breakfast. It was a great rush for me and my family as we had to drive out for a quick breakfast immediately after Mass and return to the church in time for the children’s catechism class. Now with the start of coffee morning by the volunteers, we can really enjoy our Sunday morning breakfast comfortably in a relaxed atmosphere and more importantly in a safe environment.
“As a regular supporter, I personally feel that the food and drinks prepared a
