Dedication and blessing of the new church |
| Posted by Diocese of Penang (pgdiocese) on Jan 04 2011 |
Risen Christ Penang starts off the new year 2011 with an auspicious dedication service of her new church building. A total of more than 1200 people including the guest of honor the Chief Minister of Penang Lim Guan Eng, Mr Wong Hon Wai the state assemblyman of Air Itam, the pastors of the neighboring Anglican church and the headmaster of SJK(C) Kong Min attended this service.
Bishop Anthony Selvanayagam acknowledged the enormous contributions by the parish priest Rev Fr Augustine Wong toward this parish since his arrival in 2001. The church now stands on 1.3 acre land with 3 main buildings; the new Church building, the parish house and the activity centre, Tavennec Centre that housed 14 classrooms and a hall; and a new grotto. “He has done a great job and he can now proudly leave this parish for Permatang Tinggi. The parishioners there are waiting for Fr Wong” said the jovial Bishop Anthony in his speech.
The new church building was designed by architect Mr Edmond Khoo, a fellow parishioner of Holy Spirit, Penang. He drew his inspiration from the old chapel of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Penang. “Simplicity and quietness are the key. The interior design of the church must not be ‘LOUD’ as we need quiet moments with our Lord” explained Edmond.
The front facade of the church depicts the divine rays coming down from the heavenly cloud. “It’s the cloud that our Lord Jesus Christ ascended to. Looking up from the entrance of the church is like looking upwards to heaven” Edmond explained further.
“This is an eco-friendly church. Most of the items are refurbished from various churches“ said the parish pastoral council chairman Mr Anthony Tan in his speech. He thanked the Little Sisters of the Poor, Penang for giving the main crucifix, the tabernacle, the relic, the St Joseph statue, the St Anne Statue and some pews. He also thanked St Anne Church, Bukit Mertajam for the Stations of the Cross and others for their generous contributions in various forms.
