ALOR SETAR: There was a double celebration at the Feastday celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Church of St Michael. The Eucharistic Mass was celebrated together with the opening ceremony of the grotto dedicated to our Lady of Lourdes and the first anniversary of the “Vineyard sisters”.

The Vineyard Sisters was formed one year ago by the ladies' group of our parish who felt that they needed to do some charitable contribution to the church as well as to do the work of Christ just as Mary did.

Today they have 34 active members and their objective is One in Spirit, mind and Purpose. They have accomplished some of their goals and they feel they have lots more to share and contribute.

After more than a year of patiently waiting and praying, at last, there is a grotto built on the church grounds. The event was not only attended by the parishioners but there were also visitors from as far as Seremban, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Kangsar and Balik Pulau.

Fr Jude exclaimed that the Mass is specially offered for every one who was gathered here and also who had generously contributed but were not able to make it for the event.

The Rosary recitation was carried out by the ‘Vineyard Sisters’ in three languages. It was the first event on the list. The Eucharistic Mass was then presided over by Fr Michael Dass from the Church of Christ the King, Sungai Petani.

In his homily, Fr Jude explained that Mary had to suffer because she said ‘YES’ to God quoting “Be it done to me according to thy word” and carried out what God had instructed her to do. Since Mary was sinless and very obedient to the calling of GOD, she too was taken up to heaven as a reward and that is why we celebrate the Assumption today. Assumption means (taken up to heaven). He also urged the parishioners to continue to seek Mother Mary's help and intercession and to take care of our earthly bodies so that we may have the strength and determination to follow Jesus.

Before the final blessing, Fr Jude mentioned five Characteristics in Bahasa Malaysia that were outstanding in the Blessed Virgin Mary. He mentioned that she had strong faith in God and that God would not let her down if she obeyed his commands. She was very close to God and never once turned away in times of difficulties. She would always pray to God for guidance so that she could always help others. One example was that she went and assisted Elizabeth during her pregnancy when she received the good news that Elizabeth was pregnant after being barren for so many years. She has reflected and shown us how much was her love towards God.

At the end of the Eucharistic celebration, Fr Jude then blessed the Vineyard sisters and their anniversary cake and thanked them for their contribution.

After the Mass, Fr Jude declared the grotto opened officially and thanked all the parishioners who had sacrificed their time and contribution in one way or another in ensuring that the grotto materialised. A million thanks rang out to those who came from outstation and especially all the parishioners from Church of the Visitation, Seremban, who donated flowers for the event.

Everyone then adjourned for fellowship and the sumptuous meal prepared by the St Michael’s parishioners.
