Families work together for Lent

PENANG: Throughout the six weeks of Lent, the members of the Parish Human Development Committee together with some youths, come out with interesting activities to promote the awareness of the campaign. This year, together with the older Catechism children, they formed the Love Squad team. Besides the usual distribution of Lent flyers and envelopes, the Love Squad, on the second week, distributed flyers urging families to pick a day to fast together.

This is in keeping with the Lenten theme Light a life as family. Week Five is reserved for a day of Family Prayer. In reaching out to our migrant brothers and sisters, there will be a multi-lingual Mass on Week Three, followed by fellowship. To make sure that the parishioners contribute something to the community, there will be a gotong-royong at the Esplanade on Week Six.

Finally, to urge people to contribute something ‘from within themselves’, there will be a blood donation campaign on the last week of Lent. Throughout the whole season of Lent, a Lenten Tree and a Lenten Cross (made by the parishioners) will be up in all the four City Parish churches. The Lenten Tree will be managed by the SSVP members. It is a wish-list tree from SSVP adoptees and people in need.

Their wishes will be up on the tree and parishioners are urged to pick a wish to grant. Parishioners will be given a chance to seek for reconciliation or healing with the use of the Lenten Cross. Petitions will be written on pieces of paper which will be put on the cross and the petitioners will pray for their intentions throughout the season of Lent.

The Lenten Cross is the brainchild of the parish priest, Fr Dominic Santhiyagu. The crosses (four crosses for the four churches) were made by the parishioners themselves. “I want the parishioners to feel that the cross is the work of their hands.” said Fr Dominic. “By making the cross, they will get to identify with the Cross’ sufferings.

On Good Friday, we will wrap the Cross in red and pass it around for the parishioners to feel. This Cross will later become the Resurrection Cross.” Fr Dominic was happy with the activities organized for Lent. He encouraged all parishioners to participate fully in all the activities, as he said Lent is a 40-day retreat for us, just like how Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert “The gospel on Ash Wednesday stated clearly that we must fast, pray and do charity work,” said Fr Dominic.

“Therefore these activities are organized in line with that — for the parishioners to fulfill their Lent obligation. It is also a good way to reactivate the parish, to make them feel a sense of belonging, giving and serving.” — By Lucia Lai
