IPOH: The parish of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) had a Family Carnival at D.R. Seenivasagam grounds, on Sunday Oct 19.
This was the “third and last Parish event for the year”, as stated by Fr Philip Lai CSsR in his opening speech. Fr Lai encouraged those present to let their hair down and enjoy themselves. His speech was followed by a dance performance by the Sunday School Children, led by Serene Hew.
There was also a Line Dance performance by the OMPH Line Dancers. Dressed in pink and red tops, the line dancers performed which got the crowd cheering. Following this was the Senamrobics, a warm up routine before the telematch events.
The telematch events were categorized according to the different age groups - under 6 years, 6-8 years, 9-11 years, 12-14 years, 15 years and above (young adults) and also 56 years and above for the senior parishioners. Participants of the telematch were put into four different groups, namely St Matthew (pink), St.Mark (blue), St Luke (yellow) and St John (white). Games were also organized for the spectators, such as Musical Bottles and the Card Game.
This parish event is a result of months of planning, according to Joseph Loh. “Every year, the Family Life Ministry organizes a Family Day. This year we decided to organize a carnival.”
He also added that the organizing committee was made up of members of various ministries within the parish, not just members of the Family Life Ministry. Loh elucidated that the food (breakfast and lunch) was catered based on coupon sales. “Nestle agreed to give us 3,000 cups of Milo free,” he said.
The carnival began as early as 7.30am with breakfast. Coupons priced at RM5 covered both breakfast and lunch. Drinks such as distilled water and Milo were available free of charge. A mini boutique was set up by the PHDC of OMPH, an ice cream stall by the Charismatic group, a Tau Foo Fah stall, and a Sand Art stall. The Good Shepherd sisters had a stall too, selling apple pie, curry puffs and other goodies.
Transport was provided from the church to the D.R. Seenivasagam grounds at RM 1 per person, one way. The bus services were between 7.00 am and 8.30 am. After the prize giving ceremony, lunch was served at about 12.30pm.
