PENANG: The Feastday of Sts Laurent Marie Joseph Imbert and Jacques Honore Chastan was celebrated at College General on Sept 20 with the theme Deepening Our Discipleship Through Endurance and Joy.
Both Sts Imbert and Chastan had served College General as formators in the 19th century and more interestingly, St Chastan served as parish priest at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Pulau Tikus from January 1828 to April 1833.
This year’s feastday was especially meaningful as a week before the celebration the seminarians had their in-house annual silent retreat for five days with retreat master Fr Robin Andrews. The retreat provided them with rich spiritual insights. The triduum also served them well to prepare for the celebration. Over three evenings they reflected on the feastday’s readings. It was a powerful experience that assisted them in “Deepening Our Discipleship”.
The feast culminated with the Eucharistic Celebration which was celebrated by Fr Francis Tsen. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart in the seminary where the Mass was celebrated was filled, overflowing with aspirants, novices, nuns and even families who came from within and beyond the island. Bishop Antony Selvanayagam, together with formators and visiting priests, were also there for Mass.
In his homily Fr Tsen shared how important prayer is not only for priests and seminarians but also for the laity. He explained critically on how prayer sustained the two great saints to be faithful to God and be witnesses of Christ to all of us. He encouraged all to have a spiritual motto in life in order to be focused on God.
After the Mass, all present were invited for a fellowship which was an opportunity to strengthen existing relationships and build new ones.
As Fr Edwin Paul, Rector of College General pointed out, the celebration would not have succeeded had not the formators, seminarians and College staff all come together. Everyone put in more than their share of effort, talents and time in order to make this event a meaningful one.
It was like grapes of different sizes and tastes crushed together and fermented over time in order to produce a good wine. It called for endurance but it gave everyone joy.
