KOTA BHARU: The small Catholic community of Kota Bharu, Kelantan was a hive of activity on Oct 9 and 10 when they celebrated the 58th anniversary of the Church of Our Lady of Fatima of the Holy Rosary.
The new PPC with the guidance of the parish administrator, Fr Robert Daniel, has been actively engaged in planning the direction the church needs to take.
The Parish Feastday celebration with the theme Deepening Our Discipleship Through the Word of God was a two-day event with Mass at 8.30pm on Oct 9. The homily by the celebrant, Fr Robert, was based on the Gospel reading for the day, Luke 11: 5 - 13. “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9.
“Jesus urges us to be persistent and unashamed as we keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking. If at first our prayers are not answered, do not be discouraged, rather we should persist, unceasingly, undeterred by seeming silence and unshaken in the hope of God’s promise.”
The next day, Oct 10, began with the praying of the Rosary. In his homily, based on the readings for the 28th Sunday of the Year, Fr Robert began by saying that all of us at some time experience high and low points in our lives. However, the important thing is to know how to manage these two opposites. Isaiah offers a vision of hope for the Jews at the lowest point of their history. So too do we need to have a vision of hope to come out of the difficult moments in our lives. Elaborating on the second reading (Ph: 4: 12 - 20) he said that there is joy even in suffering because suffering is the foundation on which character is built.
He concluded with this insight: in joyful or sad moments, experience helps us come out of self-focus or needs to keep us balanced in life. These two points, the high and the low, joy and suffering make human life complete. “Joy is experienced fully when we have experienced pain.”
During the Eucharistic celebration, 12 children, dressed in white, took another important step in their spiritual journey by receiving the Sacrament of Eucharist. Later certificates were presented to the first communicants.
After the speeches, there was a 15-minute video presentation entitled Down Memory Lane documenting the activities of the community from Oct 2007 till now.
Later outside the church, the youth and the church band kept the crowd entertained with entertainment and music. Proceeds from the sale of coupons will be used to finance the church library which was recently given a new and more suitable place.
The fellowship lunch held in the covered lot outside the church as well as in the new ‘Agape’ room consisted of different food stations of different cuisine to satisfy each and everyone’s taste buds.
Prior to the feastday, a gotong royong had been organised.
There was also a blood donation drive a fortnight before. A record 51 pints were donated on that day!
Through the generous contributions in cash and kind, it was possible to bring to fruition two extensions: firstly, the ‘Agape’ corner which will be used for a variety of activities, and secondly, a special walled-in corner to store recyclable materials.
