IPOH: As 80 First Holy Communicants and parishioners gathered for Mass on Nov 16  at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Silibin, Fr Bernard Paul reminded everyone of the Nov 5, 2006 illegal protest rally held outside the compounds of the church.

It was organised by a group of Muslims who had reacted to a SMS that alleged the church was about to baptize a group of Muslim Malays.

That day was the 1st Holy Communion Day of over 90 children. He praised the children, parents and parishioners because on that day they did not turn away from Jesus Christ. He was proud that the children had bravely marched into the church from the Lourdes Hall despite the noisy protesters outside the church compound, the parents who had brought their children and bravely entered the church without going back home and the parishioners who were there. Today we can rejoice that we have been witnesses of Christ.

Fr Bernard in his homily illustrated a powerful message by using two chicken eggs. Holding an egg in each hand, he tried to break them. Only the egg in his right hand broke but the egg in his left hand did not. He then asked the children why only one egg broke. He then gave the answer. The egg, which was empty inside, broke while the other egg did not because it was full inside. The yolk with the egg white both gave strength to the egg — which depends on both.

Someone who is empty inside can easily be crushed by the world of today but someone who is filled inside can withstand almost anything. He said that a person’s action reflects what is inside him. Anyone who is filled with the Word of God cannot be disturbed by anything. We must fill ourselves with the Word of God to survive in the world today as many challenges await us as we go along the journey of life.

He also told the parents and the children that they must attend Mass every Sunday. Parents must teach their children the importance of the Word of God. They must bring the children to church to participate in the Eucharistic Celebration.
