IPOH: Some of Ipoh’s famous food to sample and tasty souvenirs to take back home will be the main attraction at the Our Mother of Perpetual Help food and funfair to be held at its grounds in Ipoh Gardens on Aug 19.

Starting from 9.00am till 3.00pm, over 44 stalls selling home-cooked and hawker food, drinks, vegetables and fruit, as well as games, plants and handicraft items make for a super Sunday brunch and a relaxing time with the family and friends.

Ipoh’s famous Heong Paeng, Chee Cheong Fun, Chicken baked in sea salt, banana leaf chicken curry rice, Nasi Kunyit with wild boar and chicken curry, popiah, and Wan Ton Mee, are some of the delicious favourites on sale.
After a hectic work week and a day of Saturday errands, many people tend to have the time and inclination to linger a little longer at a Sunday gathering after Mass, so it seemed only natural to use this time to build closer rapport, and stronger ties among parishioners, BECs and church ministries, said organising chairman Joseph Loh of the Family Life Ministry at OMPH.

Together with his wife Anna, Loh and members of the Family Life Ministry, and representatives of ministries and BECs,  mooted the idea of holding a food and funfair. The idea is to nurture family togetherness and solidarity amongst Christians of different ages and cultures, as well as between Christians and residents in the community of Ipoh.

Creating a “family atmosphere” that encourages unity, and cooperation with others to make OMPH part of “Our Family” will help many parishioners experience a sense of belonging and sharing, he said.

They hope to raise at least RM50,000 to renovate the parish community hall and repair the leaking roof of the cafeteria and bookshop.

“More importantly, as people come here, they will experience a sense of commitment and belonging, in the parish,” Loh said.

This spirit of gotong-royong or working together in the food and funfair will also help towards BECs “gelling” in a group effort, and opening them up to the needs of others, through their group activities and efforts.

This year, the OMPH food and funfair also includes something for the children although OMPH’s focus has always been on including young children and teenagers in its church activities.

To keep the young children busy and excited, there will be pony rides and amusing clowns, an all-time favourite at children’s events.

Working alongside the adults to keep their hands busy, the OMPH Youth will take on the responsibility of running seven games stalls. Other attractions include creative Sand Art, a jumble sale and karaoke.

The stalls are being manned by BECs, ministries including one by the Good Shepherd Sisters, and other well wishers from Kuala Lumpur, Tapah and Teluk Intan.

Tickets to the OMPH food and fun fair can be obtained from the parish office at tel: 05-5458220 or through Joseph Loh at 012-5163600.
