Gawai/Kaamatan celebration in Penang

PENANG: About 300 Sabahan and Sarawakians, mostly those on pilgrimage to St Anne’s feast, gathered at the Church of the Our Lady of Sorrows on July 27 to celebrate the Gawai/Kaamatan festival.

The Eucharist was celebrated by Fr Francis Dakun, who is from the Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Keningau. Concelebrating was Fr Thomas Yip from Diocese of  Kota Kinabalu.

Dancers, resplendent in their colourful costumes, led the entrance procession with a Sumazao dance.

Touching on the first reading, Fr Yip said that wisdom is the most important thing in our lives.  It doesn’t matter if we have lots of qualifications and degrees; if we don’t have wisdom, it's meaningless. What is wisdom then, he asked, and explained that wisdom is simply when we do or follow what God wants us to do.

Moving on to the Gospel, which touched on ‘looking for treasure’, he made a comparison to pilgrims attending the annual St Anne’s feast. Every year, he said, thousands of pilgrims came to the feast to honour St Anne, but at the same time they were also searching for something.

“What are they looking for?” asked Fr Yip, “Do you remember what St Augustine said — ‘My heart is restless until I find rest in God.’ They are all searching for God.”

He said that God is the greatest treasure we all are seeking for. As God himself had given us a treasure — he sent his Son to us — we too when we receive the treasure of his son Jesus Christ, must share it with everyone. One of the ways to do this is by spreading the Gospel to everyone.

He ended his homily by telling the Sabahans and Sarawakians how grateful they should be to God for them being able to celebrate their festival in church.

“This is a celebration of the community, for which we must always thank God,” he stressed. “Do not forget our culture, do not forget to thank God.”

A subscription lunch was served after the Mass, followed by a cultural show. There were many interesting presentations like traditional dances from the various ethnic groups. A band and lucky draw helped to keep the crowd  till the end.
