God's plan, to reconcile us to each other

IPOH : Pentecost, a day when through the Holy Spirit we can be set free from ourselves and be united to others in a fellowship of love, is only one of the aspects of Christ’s salvation for us.

St Michael’s Church parish priest, Fr Michael Cheah, said this in his homily during the Mass of Pentecost. He said the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost fulfilled the Paschal Mystery and gave the apostles a new heart and new nature.

This inward change was what the apostles wrote about after experiencing the Holy Spirit.

Today, “being filled with the Holy Spirit” is a call to all Christians.

“The Holy Spirit is sent by God into our hearts at Baptism and at Confirmation to enable us to live out this life in the world, and to choose the way the Spirit urges us,” he said.

This doesn’t mean we are free from sin.

However we become conscious of what kind of persons we want to be, and of our sinful desires. We are also aware of another force at work to help us towards holiness.

“We can choose to be unforgiving and filled with anger, or we can choose to live our lives according to the Holy Spirit.”

If the  Holy Spirit is allowed his way, it will result in the fruit of the Spirit — love, faith, temperance, patience, peace, kindness  and speaking in tongues.

“All of us have different gifts. Some have healing powers, eloquence in preaching, or languages, but we are given these spiritual gifts to enhance the Church now.

“God’s plan is to reconcile us to each other, and to Himself, where believers everywhere can become a united Body of Christ, in the Church.

“In his priestly prayer Jesus prayed for us to become united. We don’t have to be afraid.

“Trouble can only comes when we invite other types of "spirits" into our lives."
