Introduce Elect to life in the BEC |

TAIPING: Bishop Antony Selvanayagam exhorted the sponsors and facilitators of the Rite of Initiation for Adults to introduce the Elect into the life of the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) the sooner the better. It is in participating in the life, the sorrows and joys inherent in the struggles of the BECs in striving to live Gospel-centred lives that the Elect experience the sense of faith in the Gospel as they continue their journey towards full admission into the Church at Easter in the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist.
The bishop was presiding over the Celebration of the Eucharist and the Rite of Election of Catechumens at the Taiping Catholic Parish in St Louis Church in Taiping on the first Sunday of Lent on Mar 13 at 5.00 pm. The 121 candidates for the rite of election had made their decision to intensify their induction towards full membership of the Church during the 40 days of Lent.
They hail from eight parishes from the Southern region of the Penang Diocese and were accompanied by their respective parish priests, their sponsors, well wishers, and facilitators of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). “Why is it you, of all people whom God wants to be part of the Roman Catholic Church? It is a mystery,” the bishop said.
“Keep an open mind, and listen to the word of God to understand Jesus.” He also prayed that the candidates might listen with open hearts to the word of God, responding with faith to God’s call to be among his chosen ones, and faithfully walk in the way of the Lord, thus realising more fully what a gift and privilege it was to be so elected by God.
Fr Francis Anthony, the priest delegate, then presented to the bishop the catechumens of the southern region of the Diocese of Penang. After blessing and incensing the books, the bishop declared that the catechumens whose names were entered in the books, were new members of the Elect. He then proceeded to sign the books. At the concluding speech, the bishop stressed the importance of the Elect being involved in their respective BECs.
He directed the facilitators and sponsors to initiate the newly elect to be actively involved in their own BECs. “It is in the BECs that one senses and lives the life of faith among the parishioners. Know that they are not alone in the journey. Be open to everyone, including non- Christians. The BEC can help and influence others to want to become among the chosen ones.” Fr Jude Miranda, the parish priest of St. Louis Church, thanked all who worked together to ensure the rite of Election run smoothly. — By Raphael NAT
