Ipoh outing for Ozanam children

IPOH: A fun-outing to Ipoh was organised on Dec 8 for the children from the Ozanam Drop-in Centre of Sungai Siput. The outing was sponsored by the Parish Human Development Committee (PHDC) of St Michael’s Church as its Advent project.

The 26 children were chaperoned by a few single mothers, youths and members of the Society of St Vincent De Paul (Conference of Sungai Siput) who manage the Ozanam Drop-in Centre. The Drop-in Centre was established in August this year and provides daycare services for children from poor, single parent homes. Among the features of the daycare programme are periodic exposure outings for the children. Unbelievably, this was the first trip out of Sungai Siput for many of the children, including one special wheelchair-bound girl called Christina.

Upon arrival in Ipoh on a chartered bus, the children and their chaperones were taken on a brief tour of St Michael’s Church. Parish Priest Fr Michael Cheah was on hand to welcome and meet the group. After some refreshments, the children bopped away to the “The Chicken Dance” led by Susan Lim of the Penang Office of Human Development and some fun-loving PHDC members.

Then they were off to see two of Ipoh’s famous limestone caves Sam Poh Tong and Lin See Tong. The children had a great time feeding the turtles and playing on the extensive grounds. Shortly after noon, the group headed back to Ipoh where a children’s party had been organised at the Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in Ipoh Garden.

The group was joined by a beaming Fr Anthony Pillai, Parish Priest of St John the Baptist Church, Sungai Siput. After a hearty meal, a cake-cutting ceremony was held with Fr Anthony doing the honours. This was followed by fun and games. At the end of the party, the children were presented with gifts from KFC and members of the PHDC.

Since the establishment of the Drop-in Centre, it was noticeable that the children had improved in their physical and mental development. As well as the daycare services at the Drop-in Centre, the Conference also provides counselling for single mothers, documentation and health assistance. The Conference is hoping to start tuition classes for the children in the near future. Assistance from interested parties will be most welcomed by the Conference.
