Keep Alive The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit |
| Posted by Diocese of Penang (pgdiocese) on Sep 07 2006 |
TAIPING: The parishioners of Taiping Catholic Church recently held a Life in the Spirit Seminar (LSS) conducted by Alex Loo and his team of 18 facilitators.
In a departure from the usual sequence of having reconciliation and praying over by the laying of hands only at the final stages of a LSS, the retreat began with the participants being led to repentance in the Sacrament of Reconciliation with a priest through a series of talks and songs, some of which were composed by Alex himself.
The participants were prayed over by the team for the baptism by the Holy Spirit, which was reinforced at the end of the retreat. "Don?t ask for anything for yourself or for others, such as healing of illnesses or relationships. Ask only for the gift of the Holy spirit." Alex admonished before his team prayed over the people individually.
"Many of us have been walking through life lame and blind as I had been doing during the first 40 years of my life. Although we may have everything that life can offer, we were often crippled by hurts and fears. We were deaf without our being aware of it, for we were not able to distinguish between the voice of the world and the voice of God. We naturally take good care of our bodies but neglect the health of our souls and spirit, thus we are not wholesome," Alex shared.
Clement Samuel, a prime mover for the retreat believes that a miracle happened. "I have a good friend who was severely critical and negative towards any renewal movements for years, in particular the charismatic renewal, so much so that I avoid talking to him anything concerning the charismatic renewal. It is a miracle of grace that he walked over to me after the retreat to shake my hands and congratulated me for being involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement."??
In winding up the retreat, Alex said, "Buddhism can do without Buddha, Islam can do without Prophet Mohamed, but Christianity cannot do without Jesus Christ." He suggested five points in which to follow in order to keep alive the fruits of the retreat and the gifts the Holy Spirit had imparted during the retreat.
The first is prayer, followed by the regular study of the Bible, and not just reading it. The third is to \'Be in your Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) and the parish community. In Genesis, God said that it is not good for man to be alone. When burning charcoals are kept together, the flame is hot, but when a piece of burning charcoal is taking out and isolated from the rest of the flame, it soon cools down and its flame dies. So it is with human relationships, the fire of love will burn warmly when we are in community, and extinguished when we are isolated.\'
The fourth point is to be of service motivated by our love of God and not by self-interest. The fifth point is the frequent reception of the sacraments to keep us in constant touch with God especially the Holy Eucharist and the sacrament of reconciliation. "First draw close to Jesus. Then only can we serve in a Christ-like manner," he said.
