Keep spirit of jubilee alive

PENANG: The Golden Jubilee of the Penang Diocese may be over but the spirit and the works based on the theme Celebrate Eucharist, Build Family and Live Community will continue and be carried out until the diamond jubilee of the diocese.

This was emphasized by Bishop Antony Selvanayagam at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on Oct 2. The bishop was celebrating his Episcopal silver jubilee Mass organised at parish level.

The bishop acknowledged that many may not be around to witness the Diamond Jubilee, but he hoped that whatever plans laid out now will be continued.

In his homily, Bishop Selva noted that the two readings for the day refer to vineyards.

“The master worked, nurtured and cared for the vineyard. When it bears no fruit, it comes to a wretched end,” he said.

He compared the vineyard to the tools that God has given us. “God says, ‘I have given you priests, ministers, the Bishop — where is the fruit? Where is my rental?’ If we are not responding to the call of God, the opportunity will be taken away from us and it will be given to others. Ask yourself, am I producing the fruit?” he declared.

“The greatest challenge today is the family,” said the Bishop. “Problems occur even a few months after marriage, the marriage vows often forgotten. We become ritualistic because we are taught to follow habitual ceremonial functions like Holy Communion at the age of 10 and attending Mass on Sundays.

“Jesus then becomes a ritual, He is not personal. If someone were to take away your mother, you will be heart-broken. You react because she is someone personal to you. Would you feel the same way about Jesus? Do you see him in the same light?” asked the bishop.

In a chilling and thought-provoking message to parents, Bishop Selva said, “Don’t cry for children who have gone astray, they are actually going the right way. You have given them rituals that can be thrown away and they are left with nothing; you have not given them Jesus”.

He then urged parents to give their children the one who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. “We are endowed to respond to God’s call. We pass on what we believe to our children — not just for one day, but daily. You and I are the vineyard — we bear fruit to this person who is Jesus. Teach your children how to pray and how to forgive. The family and community can only find true happiness if we give God His rental which is faithfulness and fidelity”.
It was also a cause for a special celebration when 9 year-old Isaac Jon Martin became the sole recipient of First Holy Communion. His father\'s work related travels had prevented Isaac from attending formal catechism classes. Nevertheless, his parents stood out as shining examples of the workers in the vineyard, who had used the tools of faith given to them by instructing and nurturing their son at home.

Bishop Selva and Fr Francis Anthony joined parishioners and visitors to a special fellowship buffet lunch after Mass in a packed parish hall.
