KOTA BHARU: A harmonious blend of the various races and people of different faiths was evident in the crowd of people who attended the Church of Our Lady of Fatima of the Holy Rosary’s 60th Anniversary Gala Nite and Fundraising dinner held Aug 20, 2010. The venue of the celebration was the Grand Riverview Hotel. Close to 960 people were treated to a sumptuous eight-course Chinese dinner.
Among the distinguished guests present were the representatives of Dato’ Hj Anuar Tan, (a Kelantan State Exco member), Chua Chuan Lay and Lim Guan Seng. Also present at the dinner was the Chairman of Kelantan State MCA, Tan Ken Ten. During the dinner, both parties made monetary pledges for the Fatima Open Hall Construction Fund.
The Bishop of Penang Diocese, Rt Rev Antony Selvanayagam, also graced the occasion. In his speech, the Bishop stated that he was impressed with the support shown by people of other faiths for the Catholic community in Kota Bharu, by their presence at the dinner and also through their monetary donations to the fund. Besides the good food, the guests at the dinner were also treated to a variety of entertaining performances.
The ballet and the two contemporary dances performed by students by Lena Dance Academy were exciting. The Pasir Mas Chinese Chamber Line Dancing Group also entertained the guests with two lively dances. Three East Malaysian dances, the Sumazau, Ngajat and Kebun were performed by the children of the parishioners from Kem Desa Pahlawan.
A very gifted family of musicians from Sungai Petani, the Revivers, was also present to provide the music for the celebration. A video presentation of the various activities held by the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in the past and at present was screened for the non-parishioners at the dinner. The highlight of the evening was the 60th Anniversary cake-cutting ceremony, when six senior couples of the parish were invited to cut the anniversary cake. Some of them have been with the church ever since it was first established in 1950.
Others represented those who have dedicated much of their time and financial support to build up the church to what it is today. And some represented those members who have come to Kota Bharu to make a living, then moved away to their hometowns or to other states. But their love and loyalty to the church is evident through their many generous monetary donations to the Fatima Open Hall Construction Fund. Several tables of the Gala Nite dinner were sponsored by some of these ex-parishioners.
And a few of them even made the journey back to Kota Bharu to be present at the dinner to celebrate the occasion. It was indeed a wonderful celebration for everyone present, the parishioners as well as the non-parishioners. A big ‘Thank You’ to all those who have worked so hard to make this event a success. — By Josephine Foong / Teo
