PENANG: On Saturday, July 16 the parishioners of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, witnessed the launching of the Christian Community Centre cum Chapel project. It was initiated by the parish priest, Fr Francis Anthony and his assistant Fr Henry Rajoo.
The Centre, located in Sungai Ara about 8 kilometers away from the Cathedral, lies in the midst of the fast expanding township around Bayan Lepas. It is a project, which is welcomed heartily by the estimated 2,000 parishioners residing in the locality.
All these have been made possible, thanks to the generosity of the late Mr H.R. Watts of Sungai Ara Holdings Sdn Bhd. Mr Watts donated the land about 16 years ago to build a Christian Community Centre
for the mainline Christian churches with the Catholic Church having full ownership.
The Sungai Ara church building committee formed in May 2003 had worked tirelessly to get the groundwork prepared. One of their more exciting assignments for the committee was getting the chapel to be named and the honour was extended to the Cathedral’s parishioners.
Out of the 5 names proposed and short listed — Chapel of St Pio, St Faustina, Divine Mercy, Mary, Queen of Peace and the Most Holy Trinity — the parishioners chose the name, Chapel of the Divine Mercy.
Included in the building structure, are the priest’s sresidence, halls and classrooms. The church and gallery have a combined seating capacity of 768 with the option of utilising the hall to accommodate another 150.
The challenge now rests with the Fund Raising Committee for innovative ideas to raise an estimated RM4.5 million for both the cost of the building and the furbishing.
After revealing the names of the members of both the Building and Fund Raising Committees, Fr Francis called on the congregation to pray for the success of this vital link in a growing township. He also echoed the sentiment of the congregation that the Chapel of the Divine Mercy may become an independent church with its own resident priest.
