BUKIT MERTAJAM: There were many activities for the 2008 Lenten campaign in St Anne’s parish; aimed at creating awareness of people who suffer and in need of basic necessities.
Held throughout the season of Lent with the theme Lend a Hand, the main players were PHDC (Parish Human Development Committee) and the Love Squad of St Anne.
Dr Mary Fernandez, the representative of PHDC and Love Squad main committee, Donny Adams and Joshua Raj launched the Lenten campaign in the first week of Lent. The cutting of ribbon to symbolise the beginning of this campaign was done by assistant parish priest Fr Simon Ee during the Sunday mass. Lenten envelopes were also distributed.
Boxes were displayed at the church entrance to collect food items for two charity home; Rumah Sinar Ceria and Shan Children Home.
During the catechism lesson, the Banner of Hope was raised up. It was filled with the handprints of the children of the parish. An art competition was held for students from Form 1-3.
From the second week of Lent, exhibitions of St Vincent De Paul (SSVP), BEC activities, and the Haemodialysis Centre of St Anne were displayed. A short health talk on cardiac problems and lifestyle change was held after Mass.
Coffee morning was held one Sunday for the SSVP adoptees, organised by the Love Squad. Many parishioners took part in this event and offered support and love for the needy families.
