Theme:   LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOURS

The haunting face of a frail little child and the pleading face of an old woman stare out of the posters and  the question ‘Love your neighbour… if you don’t, who will?’ flashed out in the centre.  This set the tone for the Penang Diocesan Lenten Campaign 2010.

For the year of 2010, the Penang Diocesan Lenten Campaign (PDLC) committee decided to choose a theme that people can easily relate to – a popular phrase in the Bible – ‘Love your neighbor’.

The Lenten Campaign is aimed at touching the lives of the less fortunate with

gifts from the heart in the form of donations, contributions and even services. These people are your neighbors – if you don’t help them, who will?

The PDLC committee has come out with materials for the Love Squad Team (a team based in the parish, mobilise during Lent Season to promote the Lenten Campaign) to be used during Lent.

There are posters, banners and flyers in 3 languages.  The flyer contain information on how the funds from the 2009 Penang Diocesan Lenten Campaign was spent and names (with full details) of some of the human development projects funded by the PDLC 2009 funds e.g. the Lighthouse and the Migrant Ministry.

Other materials for the Lenten Campaign are button badges and T-shirts. The black and white t-shirts will be on sale to parishioners while the red t-shirts are for the Love Squad. Finally, of course the Lenten Campaign envelopes for the donations in cash/cheque.

Lenten Campaign Formation

Feb 02 2010

The Penang Office for Human Development (POHD) organized a formation on the Lenten Campaign at district levels for all parishes during the weekends of 16 and 17 January.  This annual was conducted annually for Love Squad members, a team mobilize during Lent, to promote the Lenten Campaign.

At North District and Penang Island, it was held on 15, 16 and 17 Jan. while on 16 and 17 Jan. weekends, it was held at North, South and  Central Perak. On 9 Jan., it was held at the Trinity parish in Nibong Tebal, Parit Buntar and Bagan Serai.

The North and Island districts were conducted by POHD staff, Ezekiel Raj, who first gave a spiritual input on what Lent is about.  After the explanation, the participants were called to come up with their own Lent Resolution for the 40 days period.

At the Trinity parish, it was conducted by POHD staffs  Belevindran in Tamil, while at Perak district, it was conducted by Sudhagaran Stanley

At the Perak level, the spiritual input was done by Andre Ong. He shared on the theme ‘Love your neighbour’, and quoted a lot from the Bible. The participants were asked to do a skit based on bible passages.

At all the districts, the POHD staffs explained about the Lenten Campaign (eg aims and objectives) using interesting and colourful slides.  Information on how the 2009 fund was spent was also shown.  Materials for the campaign were explained to them – the materials were handed to their parish priests during the January priests recollection. The participants were then divided into their parish groups to come out with plans on how they are going to promote the Lenten Campaign.  Some of the interesting plans were visit to the Orang Asli and the Elderly Home, while one parish planned to open a ‘Lent Room’.
