TAIPING: “The structure of the Mass remains unchanged,” said Fr F X Selvaraju to the Parishioners here while introducing the New General Instruction to the Roman Missal (GIRM).
However, there are minor changes in the Order of the Mass and these are statements or prayers said by the priest or Lectors. An example of this change is in the sentence This is the Word of the Lord at the end of the First and Second readings. It is now changed to these words: The Word of the Lord. This is a statement of faith rather than a narrative. An example involving the assembly’s response to the presiding priest’s greeting of The Lord be with you! Is changed to And with your spirit instead of And also with you.
Fr Francis defined the liturgy of the Mass as “the coming together of a community of believers in order to remember and give thanks for the salvation brought to us by Jesus Christ.” The liturgy of the Word is remembering and of the Eucharist is thanksgiving. Liturgy is the ritual part of the Church’s theology.

Commentators should be aware that in presenting the communal prayer of the faithful, the assembly does not pray to the Lord directly in an active voice, for the prayers at Mass are to God the Father, in God the Son, and through the Holy spirit. The prayer of the faithful should therefore be in the passive voice There are five modes indicative of God’s presence in the Eucharistic celebration — the Altar, the Word of God, the Eucharist, the priest, followed by the assembly.
A procession is a pilgrimage and a walk of faith. The congregation should be upstanding in solidarity with the five occasions of procession during Mass, namely, entrance procession, presentation procession, Gospel procession, Eucharistic procession, and the recessional procession. Devotional and spiritual hymns, like the hymns to Our Lady may be sung at the recessional procession but not during the entrance procession. Hymns at Mass always give glory to God only.
Fr Francis said that adaptation of popular songs to be sung as hymns by retaining the original melody but changing the lyrics to suit church setting has limitations. When adopting secular music for church use, there must be pastoral prudence, taking into consideration the level of maturity of the parishioners and the comfort level of other parishioners. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate between secular and sacred music.
Sacred music evokes spiritual sentiments just as popular music (pop music) evokes secular cultural sentiments. By changing the lyrics of a piece of popular song, the musical score may still evoke the sentiments of the original secular lyrics. This effect may be inappropriate for church worship. Popular music’s popularity is only temporary.
