PENANG: The PHDC of the Church of the Immaculate Conception launched the Love One- More-Child Campaign in July. Adult parishioners were invited to take on the role of mentoring schoolgoing children to assist and complement the efforts of the parents/ guardian.

While the general involvement of these mentors is to offer the fundamental gift, the gift of love and friendship towards a relationship of trust and easy dialogue, the main focus is to motivate and animate these children in education needs. Financial contribution and rewards for improved performance in studies is at the mentors’ generosity. Commitment is indicated to the mentors as one year, renewable subject to the agreement by both parties. The first batch of children were identified from the SSVP adoptee families. Response to take on the mentor role has been very heartening.

Having identified education needs for underprivileged children as one of its core activities, the PHDC set up the IC Bright Sparks Learning Centre in December ‘08.

Lessons are held every Saturday morning from 9.00am-11.00 in the church premises. Very enthusiastic and committed volunteers meet regularly to plan a theme for each lesson with that theme reinforced through the activities for that morning. The programme method is not designed along the normal school syllabus but tailored to help these children towards overall character and academic development through fun, games and activities.

A computer lab was also set up in the parish house in January this year to offer ELearning to computer deprived school-going children in the parish. A couple of PHDC members are guiding the children in the Score A programme, which is based on the official school syllabus.

Recognising that the effective long-term measure to help upgrade the standard of living for needy families is through their children’s successful education, the PHDC will continue to develop programmes towards this end. — By Andrew Wong
