Love Squad members visit home

PENANG: As part of the Lenten Campaign activities, the Love Squad members from City Parish, in collaboration with the Tamil Youth Group, organised a trip to the Sri Cahaya’s Children’s Home in Batu Maung, on March 9. About 55 parishioners joined the outreach programme

Prior to the visit, the Love Squad members had been appealing to parishioners for gifts to be brought to the Home. Many answered the appeal. Most of the gifts consisted of biscuits, Milo, sugar, instant mee and other dry foodstuff.

The parishioners reached the Home at 12.30pm, which was just in time to see the children having lunch. There were 36 children in the home, ranging from the ages of 2 to 20.

Mdm Kali, the house-mother was on hand to greet the visitors. She explained to them that the home was started by her and Linda Gregory in 1999. She said there were seven volunteers who came in daily to help in the running of the Home.

The children in the Home, Mdm Kali explained, were not orphans but were from broken homes or single mother homes. Some were sent there by the Welfare Department, Church, or NGOs.  Mdm Kali said that their job was to take care of the children — to give them shelter, food and education.

Then the visitors were taken on a tour of the home. They also spent time with the children.

A small group of children from the Tamil Apostolate, then performed two action songs. This was followed by a sing-along, led by Joseph Ng with his guitar.

Besides the gifts, RM500 was also given to Mdm Kali. This was a contribution from the visitors.
