IPOH: Some fifty adoptees and their families enjoyed a delicious curry lunch sponsored by St Michael’s Church Ministry to the Poor at the PAC hall here on Jan 23. Helped by members of SMC Women’s league, volunteers and memebrs of the Ministry to the Poor, the adoptees were served lunch and then given small gifts.

SMC parish priest Msgr Stephen Liew thanked all who came and those who organized the lunch. “We thank God for this provision of grace,” he said, before blessing the food. After lunch, the children enjoyed games such as a hoopla dance, picking up the chopsticks and batik art. Gifts were given to all of them.

Many of the adoptees were happy as they got to know each other and with the volunteers and Ministry to the Poor members. Bavitheran, 14, said he had been coming for the lunch for several years and enjoyed making new friends each time. The only son of housewife N. Selwe, 52, and P. Shadasivam, 55, he hopes to be a construction engineer one day “People here have helped me a lot, so I want to study hard and help others,” this student of ACS school said, adding that he received aid from the Ministry to the Poor in the form of money for school books and fees. His father Shadasivam, used to work as a gardener but has stopped working due to ill health. M. Vijayakumari, 46, came with her daughters Vithya, 20, and Thaminisha, 9.

Vithya and her young son, six-month-old P Liveneshwaran, also live with her. Vijayakumari also has a 16-year-old son Kukneswaran. She is a kindergarten teacher in Bercham and has been supporting her family since her husband passed away seven years ago. SMC Ministry to the Poor chairperson Jenny Fung said the members sponsored the food and gifts, with help from the Women’s League.
