PENANG: A total of 133 catechumens who are following the RCIA programme in the various parishes of the North and Island Districts of the Penang Diocese took their final step towards receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil, as they presented themselves before the Bishop of Penang, Bishop Antony Selvanayagam, to be enrolled as members of Elect.

The Rite of Election took place during the bilingual Mass at 4.00pm on Mar 12 at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit with Bishop Selva as the main celebrant. Fr Andrew Stephen and Fr Martin Then CDD concelebrated. Before Mass the catechumens, who came from the City Parish Penang, Church of the Immaculate Conception, Church of the Risen Christ, Church of the Holy Name of Jesus Balik Pulau, Church of St Michael Alor Setar, Church of Christ the King Sungai Petani, Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Kulim, Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Butterworth, Church of St Anne Bukit Mertajam, Church of the Holy Name of Mary Permatang Tinggi, and the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. were accompanied by their sponsors, family members and the RCIA catechists at the Dewan Holy Spirit for a fellowship meal.

At the beginning of the Mass Bishop Selva welcomed all the catechumens who heard the call of God and have chosen to enrol as candidates. He said, “why some came and why some did not will remain a mystery. It is not your choice. You answered the call to come and be officially recognised by the Church and then go back to your parish and be baptised during Easter Vigil.”

The Bishop reiterated that as candidates preparing for the journey towards this goal, the Word of God is important. He then touched on the readings of the first Sunday in Lent. In the Gospel we find Jesus spending forty days in the desert fasting and praying. When he is tempted by the evil one Jesus faces the challenge using the words of the scriptures. Bishop Selva said that as Christians we are always faced with temptations. We need to be faithful and trust in God’s strength. Bishop Selva advised the catechumens to always listen to God by spending time with God. After the Creed, the Rite of Election/Enrolment of Names took place. The catechumens were presented by their respective catechists.

The sponsors and the catechists then affirmed them and the Bishop invited them to enrol their names. The catechists from each parish then went forward and handed over the Book of Elect, containing the names of the catechumens to the Bishop. This was followed by the Act of Admission when the Bishop declared the catechumens as “members of the Elect to be initiated into the Sacred Mysteries at the forthcoming Easter Vigil.” — By Gregory R. Warrier
