Mass for the Vietnamese in Penang Diocese |
| Posted by Diocese of Penang (pgdiocese) on Mar 17 2008 |
9 March 2008
PENANG: About 200 Vietnamese migrant workers turned up to celebrate the Lunar New Year Mass, in their own language at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (City Parish).
It was an event organised by the Migrant Workers Support Centre of Penang Diocese, in collaboration with City Parish’s Parish Human Development Committee (PHDC).
A Vietnamese priest, Fr Francis Nguyen Van Nhut, based in the Philippines, was invited by Bishop Antony Selvanayagam to celebrate the Mass.
Before the Mass, many of the Vietnamese received the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Fr Dominic Santhiyagu, assistant parish priest of City Parish, concelebrated the Mass with Fr Francis Nguyen.
In his homily, Fr Francis said that he understood how the Vietnamese had sacrificed leaving their homes and family to come to Malaysia to earn a living. Yes, he said, everybody wants to earn money as money is important but he hoped that they would not let money be their master.
He was glad to see so many Vietnamese present for confession and the Eucharistic Celebration, as this showed they are in touch with God.
Bishop Antony Selvanayagam was invited to the altar after the post-communion prayer, to give a short speech. Before the speech, a young Vietnamese lady, Tran Thi Thuy Hang (picture in green Vietnamese traditional wear), presented a bouquet of flowers to the Bishop and thanked him in Bahasa Malaysia.
“Bishop,” Hang said, “we thank you for inviting Fr Francis and for giving us this opportunity to have confession and Mass in our own language.”
In his speech, Bishop Selva expressed his appreciation to His Eminence Gaudencio B, Cardinal Rosales, D.D., from the Philippines, who granted permission to Fr Francis to come to Penang to celebrate Mass.
Bishop Selva told the congregation that once someone is a Catholic, no matter where he is, the Eucharistic Celebration should be the centre of his life.
He was very happy to see many Vietnamese coming together for the confession and Eucharistic Celebration. He felt that this shows they want to be in touch with the Lord and with each other as one Vietnamese community in Penang.
The Bishop assured the Vietnamese that as long as they are here, they would be part of the local community.
He informed the Vietnamese that in every parish, there are groups that cater to migrant workers, so he urged the Vietnamese to get in touch with these groups, which could will be able to help them with their needs.
“Don’t feel that you are an outsider,” he told them. “Do what you can for the parish and the parish will do what it can for you.”
“Remember you are not alone,” he continued. “As long as you are a Catholic here in Penang, you belong to the Catholic Church here.”
Bishop Selva then thanked Ruth Mary Paul, from the Diocese Migrant Workers Support Centre, for coordinating Fr Francis’ visit and bringing the Vietnamese together.
When Mass ended, everyone had lunch and fellowship with one another.
