BUKIT MERTAJAM: A medical camp was held on Sept 28 at the Church of St Anne.

The camp was organised by PHDC (Penang Human Development Centre), headed by Dr Mary Fernandez. This camp was specially organized for the Myanmar refugees residing in Bukit Mertajam, Kulim and Butterworth and also the St Vincent de Paul’s (SSVP) adoptees.

Held at the Parish Activity Centre, six doctors were on hand. Youths of the Chinese language group and members of St Vincent de Paul were present too.

The objective of the camp was to provide medical assistance to the needy. The activities included eye check, urine check, sugar and pressure check and general health. Close to 80 Myanmar refugees and about 15 SSVP adoptees attended this camp.

The eye check was conducted by optometrist Mr Khor.

Dr Mary Fernandez shared that she had wanted to help these needy people. She knew about the refugees as some of them visited her clinic when they fell sick, and most of the time, they could not afford to pay for medical attention. The same applied when they visited a hospital. So, Dr Mary came up with the idea of having this medical camp to help the refugees living in the area.

“I often give them free consultation, and as PHDC chairman, we also extend help in terms of food too. The turnout was very good today,” she said.

“We were allocated some financial aid from the Lenten campaign for a mobile clinic.”
