BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Church of St Anne celebrated the Silver Jubilee of Msgr Stephen Liew with much excitement and anticipation. It was an event that took so much of planning and coordination as this is one of the biggest events for Msgr Liew who became a priest 25 years ago.
The guests started arriving immediately after Mass at Dewan St Anne. The crowd for the grand event numbered about 1,300 people inclusive of parishioners from all over Penang Diocese.
Just before 8.00pm, Msgr Stephen Liew was seen walking towards the hall with the many, many priests from the Penang Diocese and the Bishops of Malaysia. The Lion Dance group performed their colourful act at the entrance. Msgr Liew was garlanded with a flower garland and a silk shawl in the Indian way of welcoming a VIP.
Dr Mary Joe Fernandez the organising Chairperson in her speech said, "This parish is indeed honoured and privileged in organising this joyous celebration of the Sacerdotal Silver jubilee of our Parish Priest and Vicar General of the Diocese of Penang." Dr Mary also thanked all those who had come for this celebration, especially those from afar.
The cutting of the Jubilee Cake took place immediately after that. Msgr Liew called upon his four very close friends to join him in the ceremony. He also called upon the Bishop of Penang and Fr Maiccal Sinappan who recently celebrated their Jubilee celebrations to join him, and also Frs Jude Miranda and Michael Dass who had just celebrated their 8th Anniversary.
