IPOH: Our Lady of Lourdes’ new parish priest, Fr Francis Anthony’s first message to the people was for the parish to be an “Our Father” people, a people who are thankful to God and to form a united community. On the auspiciously good date of Oct 10, 2010, Fr Francis celebrated his first Mass at OLOL.
Then he was welcomed by parish council vice chairman Ramesh Victor, who outlined the developments in the parish, including the new Bernadette Centre, and more formations, and bible studies to reflect on the Word of God. He said the community of OLOL had grown to become the largest parish in Ipoh, having 8,600 parishioners. “We want to be a parish focused on the Word of God, and are lucky to have a bible scholar (in Fr Francis) to lead us,” he said. Fr Francis was then presented with a bouquet of flowers by a little child. In a short speech, Fr Francis who had served in OLOL from 1972-75 said he remembered many faces here, albeit much older.
At the time, he said he was also responsible for saying Mass in Sitiawan and usually after the 7.00am Mass in OLOL, he would be in Sitiawan for the 9.00am Mass. In thanking the people for the warm welcome, he said he respected the many renovations and structures in the parish. However, he wanted the people to work together to focus on building one community, irrespective of the different racial groups, including migrants. “It is not my parish, or your parish, but our parish, so let us work together.
Let us be a thankful people wanting joy to be in us, and that is what I will try to do. Let us not divide ourselves but put all our experiences together and be personally transformed. “We have to be the light of Christ to those who are not Catholics. We should have the dynamism to reach out to others. We are a people who receive God and our role is to bring that light to others,” he said. Fr Francis’ message was a continuation of his sermon earlier in the Mass, when he spoke of being thankful to God.
“The readings and Gospel speak of how to be thankful. It is not possible to have thankfulness without being aware that someone else has helped to make you what you are today. “Remember the Our Father prayer. When we ask for our daily bread, it is asking for God’s grace to continue serving him as Christians, living the Word.
“We ask for forgiveness, and we should also forgive others in the same way,” he said. “When we ask, ‘Do not bring us to the test,’ it is asking God not to put us in situations where we will say no to God, because of our pride and selfishness to have our way,” he said. “The Our Father Prayer means God is the Father of everyone, and he wants us to be one people, united in love,” he said. After Mass, many parishioners came forward to personally welcome Fr Francis back to OLOL.
