IPOH: Fundamental Christian sects which often pose a threat to Christians and their families, with claims of a “closer adherence” to God should make all Catholics think seriously of being active in Christian service and witness to Jesus Christ.
Besides prayer, the most eloquent testimony will be by living a consistent, loving, humble, honest, Christ-like life and to seek to win other people for Him.
Our Mother of Perpetual Help assistant parish priest, Fr Philip Lai, CSsR, said this in his sermon whilst celebrating Parents day on June 15.
“We are to be more engaged in building up the kingdom of God, taking up our privilege which has been given to us by God,” he said, adding that the Christian life should be a one in which the children enjoy fellowship with their Father and with each other. Every Christian should be deeply concerned about all his fellow men.
He cited a case where a couple faced family problems and approached the church when three of their children joined such a sect, and has since refused to join in family prayer or go to Mass.
“Undeniably, these Christian sects do considerable harm, but they also challenge us.”
Fr Lai said the case just brought to light how we, as Christians, often take certain Christian values and principles for granted.
“In the first reading (Ex19:2-6) and in the gospel (Matt 9:36-10:8) we hear about the choice of Israel as people of god and the call of the twelve apostles by Jesus.
“The Act of God in choosing some individuals is not a random selection of some and rejection of others. Sometimes these Christian sects (use this) to say there are people rejected by God. This has never been the Christian tradition.
“It is important to realize that God chooses people not only in the Old Testament but also in the New Testament. God’s choosing of us is not only in that we are unique, but that each of us is given a special function in His plan; to bring the whole world to Him.
“The call of god is special to us, a unique invitation to be in a special relationship with Him. If we are called, it is only by God's grace. No one is excluded for God is inclusive. Only humans tend to exclude others.
“God chooses people to be instruments for others, so that others may see and join in the family of God.” Yet, he added, there is still an enormous amount of work waiting to be done, to help alleviate suffering and distress.
“Every Mass is a re-commissioning (like the apostles) for each of us, that we are to be a participant in the mission to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to others. There are still millions who are ignorant of Jesus. We as members of his flock, are to bring others to God.”
After Mass, Fr Lai called all parents to the front of the sanctuary and blessed them. Children later handed each parent a small gift, and sang songs for them.
